Should I get a new heatsink?

Because I'm going to get a smaller case (go from a full tower chassis to a small case) for purposes that include noise, I was thinking that maybe I should also get a new heatsink. I have a swiftec MCX370 (I think) and I'm pretty sure it has a 60mm on the heatsink. Because of noise, could I just also buy just a new heatsink fan instead of a whole new heatsink? I payed around $50 for the heatsink, so I'm not too crazy about the idea of getting rid of it.

What would be a good and quiet 60mm to go on this heatsink? I just always figured that smaller fans are always noisier (like a 120mm is much softer than a 60mm, for instance) so I'm not too sure what to do about this heatsink situation I have.

What do you suggest I do?

Thanks! :)

Hey,

Well, you can always get a fan adapter. A 60MM to an 80mm fan adapter. I've never tried one, but I know that 80mm fans are quite a bit quiter, especially if you get one of the fans with different speeds.

They have them for 14. They probably have them for less elsewheres.

But after a good fan and shipping, may be better off with an slk800 and a descent fan for about 50 bucks, and its one of the best on the market.

I would recommend you switch first and check out the results unless you really want to spend the money. If you can hold back your temptations I strongly recommend the ThermalRight SLK800 w/ the Sunon 50 (Moderate noise level) or Vantec 84 (Loud) - Depends what you can put up with, I recommend the Sunon 50 as long as you have adaquete airflow.

The SLK800 is the top Socket A in terms of performance: http://www.overclockers.com/articles600/ and it is currently on sale at SVCompucycle for 30.00 marked down from its 50.00 price: http://www.svcompucycle.com/therslsoc462.html

Good Luck

That fan adapter sounds pretty promising. Ever used one before? It doesn't take away from performance, does it?

Hey, yes, going from a 60-80 adapter instead of just an 80mm on an heatsink designed for 80 does hinder performance a bit, I doubt its any worse than your 60 that you have on it, it's just quite a bit quieter. Im not sure, but I asked about it along time ago and thats what they said.

Like you lose air in it or something, it doesn't compress very well, someone can probably give you a good explanation.

How does a smaller case reduce noise?

Well, in theory a smaller case = less fan bays. And I'm looking for 120mm bays, not 80mms like I have right now. So larger fans = less noise.
