Best way to start folding (770 or 770ti?)

EDIT: looks like I want the 780 or 780ti rather than the 770.

Got a bunch of PCs here collecting dust and want to ease my way back into folding. It looks like a GTX 770ti or 770 780ti or 780 is the best way to go in terms of PPD per dollar. Am i close?

Would I see any bottlenecks running this on an older quad processor and MB? Also, any folding difference between the 2 and 4 gig boards? Looks like can get a 2GB GTX 770 for right around $300 3GB GTX 770ti for ~$500, but with a lower clock speed than more expensive boards.

Hope to be putting up some points in the near future.

If your going to be using GPU's for folding, there should not be any bottlenecks with the older CPU's. Now if you try to do SMP on a quad processor, the SMP folding will be slow.
 
Not to thread jack, but what are the 750ti's like for folding?
They are cheap and are great fro mining, so I'd wager they'd be good to fold on.

That's what I gathered from doing a little research. Relative to GPU, only bigadv seems to have an edge, but the cost to get there is high. Seems like I can get close to Bigadv PPD with ~3-4 GPUs.

Kinda funny, but folding on my tiny Intel NUC PC right now. Points are tiny (~2k PPD). Going to set up my Atom tablet for folding this weekend. That will far smaller from a PPD perspective, I'm guessing. Just want to see what it will do.

Way off topic in this forum, but the NUC is an awesome little PC. The form factor is great where a tiny PC is needed. Using mine for an HTPC. Running FAH it makes a little fan noise. Otherwise pretty much silent all the time.
 
IMHO you're on the right track with the 780. At this point I'm wishing I'd sprung for one over my 770, simply because of driver issues. With the 780 you can run latest drivers, with 770 stuck with older drivers, unless you're willing to take a major hit in folding speed. If you're really looking for best points per dollar though it looks like R9 290 is a better bet, just hope you don't get a lemon like i did.

It looks like they're doing 60-70K PPD on these, but not without some issues. Not clear if it's driver issue or FAH code that's the problem. I didn't keep reading once it was clear the card was problematic. :-/

But at 70K, the PPD per $ do look very good. The only downside (besides the stability) is the number PCs needed to hold more 750ti cards vs. the 780.

On newegg prices for:
they did not list a 770ti
780ti $620 - $650
780 $465 - $500
770 $300 - $320
750ti $120
290X $460 - $510
290 $360 - $400
280X $260 - $300

On my 780s I get about 190k PPD, (190k PPD/ $500 = 380PPD/dollar)
On my R9 290 160K PPD, (160K PPD/ $400 = 400PPD/dollar)
On my R9 280X 150k PPD. (150K PPD/ $300 = 500PPD/dollar)
750ti 70k PPD (70k PPD/$120 = 580PPD/dollar) [Assuming Rippyd's PPD number is correct]

Thus, of my 5 GPUs; the best per dollar for PPD is the 280X.

EDIT: Are there still major issues with the 750ti in folding?

Sure consider a 770; but for two reasons I'd chose a 280X over a 770.

I searched "770 PPD folding" and the few threads I found posted user's PPD on their 770. The PPD ranged from 50k to 120k.

1) So even the highest 120k is significantly below the 280X's 150k.
2) Plus the 280X is cheaper.
Save $50 and get about 30k PPD or more.

I have two GIGABYTE GV-R928XOC-3GD REV2 Radeon R9 280X 3GB (overclocked to 1170Mhz). On newegg you can get one for $300, or $290 after a rebate.

I want to say they are working on and may even have a core for AMD GPU's now on linux. I think i saw that somewhere in the Folding forums. Ill see if i can find the link.
 
Got a 280x up and running. Had some false starts. Older PC and I went through several revs of old driver scrubbing and other clean-up work. In retrospect, it would have been better to do a clean Win 7 install. After doing everything I could think of and still seeing a frame rate of 2+ hours, it suddenly woke up and the rate dropped to 8:23. Folding gremlins. GPU temp is holding at 71 degrees, load is 94%. Everything else is maxed out.

Trending toward 120K PPD. A bit lower than I was hoping for. Will let it run for a couple of days and see how it does.

Got it - this one looks like it'll be 125K PPD - not too bad. ASUS card holding steady at 71 degrees.

Amazing how much more work this video card does with less heat the ones I had 3 years ago.
 
And one odd thing: I'm intermittently seeing the GPU go to 0% load for a minute or so. Anybody else seeing this? Any ideas?

Not knowing how long that is, just want to make sure you have a passkey & entered it when setting up the client ??

Are you folding on the cpu also ??

What client & driver version are you running??

Post up your log and we'll have a peak.......There are a few here running 280x's

No. Running an older quad core (Q6600) it hardly seems worth it for the heat and energy cost relative to the work produced.

Do you mean Folding client? If so, whatever the latest is - I downloaded and re-installed. Driver is 14.200.1004.0. I think this is a beta driver, which could be part of the issue.

Earlier this year there was a huge benefit to running beta drivers over the WHQL certified driver, those advantages have since been incorporated into the current latest WHQL driver release Catalyst 14.4

I am unaware of any reason to run anything but those......I'm sure others will pipe in if there is a performance benefit to the current beta's.



I don't see anything out of whack in your log......I would let it run for a few days to ensure stability then maybe add/change the gpu slot in your client to request late stage beta work units if available. (This is only a request for a specific type of work unit, and is never a guarantee the client will received this type of work unit. If none of these work units are available, and regular work unit will be downloaded instead.)

Thanks for looking. I didn't see anything unusual either. I'm wondering if there a heat setting somewhere that's causing the card to slow down(?). However, temps look fine. And I'm not using FAH tmax/twait.

I went with the beta drivers just because I was having a hard time getting 14.4 to fold. That likely had more to do with old NVIDIA drivers being installed as well. Like I said, should have just gone with a clean Win 7 build. Will move back to 14.4 when this WU finishes later today.

I have another mothballed mb/processor sitting here. Rather than messing around getting this one right I think I'll do clean build. It an Intel board aand likely still has driver support. Also has dual PCIe slots.

Hmmmm.... if I want to run two of these cards on one board I'm going to need a new PSU.
 
There will be minor intermittent dips that will vary depending on wu series being run. Does not indicate a problem.
