Will a 4870 run all the modern games on 1920x1080?

I'm debating over what video card to get, either the gtx260 core 216 or the 4870 1GB. Will either one run games like cod4/5, fallout 3, gta 4, crysis etc. on all high settings on 1920 x 1080 resolution?

You should get at least 30 fps on high settings for Crysis at 1920x1080 according to all the reviews I've seen. On medium settings you can get 40+ fps at that resolution.

I think a 4830 is pushing it a bit, a 8800gts in my dad's cannot handle some games at 1920x1200 with AA (newer ones and crysis), which is overclocked past a 9800gtx+, which is the same in performance as a HD4850. I would probably go for a HD4870 1Gb if you want better results, the GTX260 core 216 is also just as good.

For GTAIV it is a horrible game, like crysis. The GTX260 / HD4870 may just pull playable frames on high with 2xAA, about 30fps possibly if overclocked a fair bit.

I get 30-40fps in Crysis with 8x or 16xAA at 1920x1200 very high settings.

Notice all the muppets have to pipe in their own opinions about the games when it's purely a technical question. Leave it out! :screwy:

In response to the technical question:

At that resolution a 4870 512MB version will struggle somewhat, so you're definitely on the right track by looking at the 1GB version of it to play Crysis and GTA IV. That or a GTX260 Core 216 will run them well. A thing to note about GTA IV however is that it also relies on a decent CPU, so you'll need a decent Quad Core C2D or i7 to get a good framerate, not just a good card.

The cards are pretty much equal in terms of performance, so it's really down to personal preference. Some guys have had issues with ATI cards, others have had issues with Nvidia cards.

i mean difference in performance, as in for the extra $40 would it be a much better idea to get a gtx 275 instead of a gtx 260.

Well based on the benchmarks, for $40 more it is worth it if you intend to overclock the 4890 as it will rival GTX285 speeds. At stock the GTX275 is a good bet and seems to just beat the 4890 at stock, but not in every game.

thank you, let a dead horse die already.

I'll leave you to work out the irony of your statement.

would the gtx 275 overclock as high as the 4890?

They're pretty even in terms of performance, not clock speeds, look here and here for GTX275 and 4890 stock and overclocked benchmarks respectively. See how the 275 wins some and the 4890 wins others. Also when you're looking at the results by resolution, look at the 1600x1200 results as that is closer to yours of 1920x1080 than 1920x1200 is. Also note in the conclusion about the extra performance they got with the 4890, that might help sway your decision a bit. :)

Probably higher.

for $40 more, how much better would a 4890 or gtx275 be?

If you've got the extra 40 bucks then get a 275 or 4890... depending on if you prefer ATI or NVIDIA.

I'm an NVIDIA man myself... so I just picked up a 260.

Wow... I almost forgot about you...

THERE: Problem solved. ;)

im probably going with the gtx 260 because form the benchmarks I've seen, the 260 core 216 is better than the 4870 and not much worse than the 280 :).

Well the 4870 1GB is as fast tbh, but go with your preference. Have fun with your new card! :)

Extensive test for FPS for COD4 live

I did an extensive (7 hour in game test) of the 4870 (512) using the COD4 Modern Warfare FPS shooter. The results are on my website. You might want to give it a look. Over all it performed very well under the different configurations I placed the card under.
