VGA not working (7970)

Hi, My main monitor has a DVI connector and it works fine. My 2nd monitor has a VGA end and is connected to a VGA to DVI adapter which is connected to the Mini Display port. The 2nd monitor is not working (dual monitors was working on my 5879).
I checked catalyst and it shows two displays but there is no image on the 2nd monitor...I am at a lost.

My card is a Diamond 7970

THANKS!

The 2nd monitor is a 20inch lcd w/ ONLY a VGA connector. The card has one DVI port (hooked up to my 22inch LCD) and 2 mini display ports and one HDMI.

(my 5870 had two dvi and 1 HDMI, both monitors worked fine on the DVI along w/ a 40inch on the HDMI)

wahoo...got it working! Hooked the vga + adapter to the DVI port and the DVI connector to the mini Display port...rebooted and right away both monitors showed up w/ the smaller lcd showing as the extended monitor. I guess the VGA does not work w/ the mini display or HDMI port. Thanks for your help and input Felix :-)

It seemed counter intuitive to hook it up this way thats why I did not try it the first time...I assume that the main display would be on the DVI connector, its just always been that way on my past few cards. So hooking up the 2nd monitor on the main DVI connection did not seem right.

no probs! I can't wait to afford another monitor because I just realised I could really double my productivity as Ive set way too many hotkeys to do the "alt+tab" thing! almost every button on my mouse and specials keys switches windows as i multitask all the time!

does one of your monitors have display ports? because otherwise you cant do the eyefinity gaming thing

My monitors are two diff sizes so eyefinity would look wonky....if I want to do any serious gaming I hook up my 40inch lcd as my main display and get busy in BF3 or Skyrim

VGA is an analog signal. HDMI and Displayport are both digital only standards, meaning you need a powered DAC (digital-analog converter) to go between the two, which can be quite expensive.

DVI is meant as a bridge between both. Depending on the type of slot, it can provide analog or digital signals.
DVI-D - Digital Only
DVI-A - Analog Only
DVI-I - Intergrated (both)

However, if you have Displayport to DVI-I to VGA, all in passive adapters, it will NOT work, you need to convert the signal. DVI-I or DVI-A to VGA works fine though.
