10 gauge speaker wire? Lol, how much wattage you pushing through them?!!!!

Well I was thinking 12 gauge for a minimum, but looked a pretty good price.

And push a lot of watts through em sometimes.

:bday:

I'll pass on the lamp wire, though it works about as well if its heavy enough gage I guess.

I only need 100 feet and the price didn't seem bad.

And yeah I used to have some of that Home Depot 12 gage he spoke of, and it started going green on me and I pitched it all, I was going to replace everything that is old here more or less in one shot

J/k a bit with this pic.

The Belden 12 gage raw looked good here too but still seemed a bit much for it.

zipcord aka lampcord is no different than speaker wire. I can try to find the debunk article showing how "audiophiles" were fooled by ultra high end coathangers vs. any other wire that is nothing but plastic coated copper.

http://forums.audioholics.com/forum...ers;-when-good-enough-enough-3.html#post15412

You dont gain anything by using 14, 12, or 2 gauge for speaker wire, unless you are pushing long distance OR hundreds/thousands of watts.

http://www.audioholics.com/audio-video-cables/speaker-cable-gauge

YMMVIANAL

There are some wires that are superior, but its mostly for durability and life, not sound. Oxygen free wires wont sound better (at first) but sure as hell, the normal copper wires will corrode and degrade over time. Shielding can have an effect on some things as well.

That said, I only use oxygen free expensive cables for musical instruments. For at home use, lowes sells "off cuts" for literally pennies a foot. I use 12 gauge for most of my things simply because I bought 100 feet of all copper wire for 7$.

Lamp wire doesnt work "about as well". Its literally the same damn thing. Theres absolutely nothing in that wire thats not in a lamp wire. Copper core, wrapped in epoxy/plastic/vinyl/whatever. Same thing 100% (minus the shielded and oxygen free wires which arent even being discussed).

edit: copper is copper mate. If your "home depot wire" was "going green" after a short time, any copper core speaker cable will follow suit... the ONLY way is to either tin (Which I personally dislike) or get some adapters for the ends.

I never said it was after a short time, but thanks.

That article I linked was probably the one debunking monster cable, etc.

Still might look into something a bit lighter and cheaper then, but am wanting some durability there also. The stuff I have running around is pretty old.

*edit* Think I'll just get some of this and call it a day. TYVM

Decided to get one of these too, have decent speakers all over and have been using my Olevia 747i sound bar as a center for far too long.

It shouldn't be too bad I'd imagine.

Decided to go at least 14 gauge though, with 700 Watts plus running around and a few are relatively long runs

Should be an odd addition, have JVC's that are modded, Kenwoods, Sony's, KLM's, add the Pioneers, it will be a real oddball speaker party.

:bday:

Pretty much what is in my signature, the Sony receiver is 5 x 100W and is using a Y-Cable on the sub woofer out to the second receiver running the old Kenwood 777Z's as dual subs.

Have a pair of these I bought when in the Marines about 1982, but mine don't have a speaker dome crushed, they still kicking along perfect.

Have one of these old things from the Sony to the Trip 7s just running those two.

It's probably more like 625W, I don't think the second receiver using two outputs uses all 250, I might explore getting something to do that would be better just as a sub amp.

I just had it laying around doing nothing at the time and tried it out for grins and giggles awhile back, the trip 7's could handle a lot more than it's throwing at em. I've seen some amp solutions on the forums here just for a two speaker set up that would probably work well just for those.

I love the usb support, and being able to control it with your cell phone, thats pretty cool.

the oxygen free wiring is a great choice. Bit more pricey then normal stuff, but it will last much longer.

Just for grins and giggle I'll list the rest of em.

I actually have a set each of the following two wired together as rear channel speakers, and they both surprised me over time for being budgets.

The poor center channel speaker that came with the Sonys came to an untimely death long ago, he he, poor little guy.

Those KLH's are deceptively good sounding for what they are.

I have a modified pair of these JVC's I use for the front left and right sound. They do not even look the same other than the woofers are the originals.

They've been tweaked about 20 years ago and still running well.

The Mids and the tweeters were apparently the weakness in those, I loved the woofs so much at the time I ripped the others out at the time and replaced em and they've been great since.

They are old Realistic replacements, and have been surprising good over the years, I even overbought on those then.

I'd look for the model numbers, but I doubt they are even made anymore and I'd have to rip em apart to get a look at em.

Might be what happens if coin mining ever takes a dump in the future and the market gets saturated with GPU's in the future.

There a lot of old school speakers floating around out there in good shape from years ago.

I hate bose speakers haha. Right now, Im using sony speakers from the 80s that rattle my doors in my house haha. Ill geta model nunmber, but htey are great. KLH's are fantastic entry models though, thats for sure.

What the hell is your reciever btw??

edit: Dat signature! haha nvm then.

edit 2: yeah I would definitely boost up your receiver, especially if you're running more than 500 watts. Onkyo makes some fantastic stuff for the money, give em a look!

edit 3: i was looking at resistance of these speakers you are buying, you need to be careful with that. Mismatched speakers, you really need to get an adapter or something and run it properly. Running 6 ohm speakers from an 8 ohm receiver WILL give you problems over time.

yeah not really a Bose fan myself these days, but I did like the 901s a few friends had ATT.

Big reason they built reputation to begin with back in those days.

Yeah, that receiver almost seems embarrasing to leave in the sig these days but I still like it.

Yeah! I love old speakers. Broken in properly, huge wattage, better enclosures... Old bose is good bose for sure.
