also, should I be running the small FFTs or blend as my stress testing?....what happens if im stable in the small fft test and get an error on the blend test?
 
Small FFTs mostly stresses the CPU, and Blend stresses both CPU and RAM. I would suspect a RAM issue if Small is stable and Blend shows errors.
 
Yeah i realize i can go to 4.8....but for the 300mhz difference i think Im more comfortable at 4.5......i managed to drop some of my vcore....gonna post my screenshots and bios setting....just running 10 passes of ibt
 
alright, so here are some screen shots of my last stable OC. Ran small FFT's, Blend and IBT and stable on all tests. I do wonder why at times on idle I see the vcore on CPU-Z hitting 1.288-1.296 then at load im at 1.304- 1.312when its set at 1.29 in bios. Let me know what you think, and if there are any other ways to drop the vcore down.....anything under 1.29 in the bios I get an error on Core #0.....hopefully the pics work

I believe it idles around 1.29 because you have your CPU Core set to Manual at 1.290, which would deliver a steady 1.290v regardless of the CPU speed.

Try setting it to offset mode with maybe a -0.010 to start and see where your vcore is at. Continue increasing the magnitude of your offset till you achieve your desired and stable vcore. This should bring your idle vcore down to 0.9xx ish
 
Thoughts and Help

Total noob used the article to help do his first overclock. Was hoping for a little feedback.

My system:

Mobo- Gigabyte z68xp ud3
CPU - i5 2500k
RAM - 8 gigs 1600
GPU - GTX 560 ti 448 cores
Case - Fractal Design R3 two 120mm intake fans on the front. One 120mm exhaust and one 120mm right in front of the PSU drawing up cooler air.
Heatsink - Hyper 212+ with only one fan attached

After 3.5 hours of 95prime I got max cpu temps of 82 Thoughts on lowering this? and other changes i should make?

Your voltage is a bit high. 1.38-1.39v is a bit high for a 4.5 ghz oc. Any decent 2500k chip should do 4.5 with less than 1.35v for sure. 82 degrees on a non hyperthreaded CPU is a bit high for my liking!

suggestions? lower the LLC? Its at 5/10 right now. Would lowering it to 3 or 4 be worth a shot? And would that then lower the temp? Maybe adding a second fan to the 212+?

Hi, I asked on the MB forum about a Z68 board and it was recommended I use a Z77. I just now found this guide and saw you recommend a Z68 or P67. What do you think?
 
The guide was written before Z77 existed.
I like the Z77 boards I've used, certainly more than the Z68.
 
You should be buying a 3570K or 3770K now (replaces 2500K and 2600K) and a Z77 motherboard. This guide is from before these existed.

Really? I thought the 3570K had heat issues? I guess not, so I can get the 3570k to 4.5 with a Hyper 212?

Get the voltage to 1.35V and figure out how much you need by gradually dialing it down as per the guide. If you're set to 1.35 but you're getting 1.39 then your LLC is too high for your board and you need to bring it down. Play around with it and the actual input number until you get 1.35 actual voltage under load in windows.

It has heat issues at a certain point but it's a newer CPU and has a better igpu and PCIE 3.0. I don't know what heatsink you need for the IB cpus. Never played with one.

Hmmm? That is for sure a curve ball for me. I will for sure need a starting point on a heatsink for the 3570K. Should I ask in the CPU forum?
 
I have been reading about the 3570K and folks are testing those and going back to their 2500K due to the 2500K being better and more stable.
