I thought with dsl (as it has a designated frequency through the line), that what you pay for you should get? I know cable isnt like this because it depends on whos on the line but thought DSL was different. oh well.

The problem with DSL is if you are far away from the broadcasting station (where you ISP is) the bandwidth you get is less and less. If you're close (within a mile or 2) you can get speeds way over what they are supposed to be. However once you're about 15 miles away its almost as bad as dial-up as I understand. Whereas if a lot of people are put on one line of cable, it can be slow, it can also go a lot farther much like cable tv. However, for myself being in a populous area and having a good provider with a good connection I don't have this problem. I used to have the service go down for a day almost every month with Comcast but I've only had that once in the 7 months I've had WoW cable.

Another thing is the load on the testing site. I tend to do three tests and then everage out for that time of the day. The backbone could be congested too. There is alot of factors besides the line into your home.

I see. That distance thing probably explains why my mate has roughly 400mbps and only pays for 256 then. He is very close to the exchange. Cheers
