Okay, finally upgraded my sputtering old OEM 8500 to a 9700np I got from mwave for $199. http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=205558

I'm wondering where to go from here, I haven't been keeping up on this stuff much. Do I need to flash the bios to overclock this card? Flash it to a 9700 pro bios for better overclocking? 9800 pro bios?

Btw, I popped it in, set everything to "Performance" in the Control Panel and got a score of 4224 in 3dmark03 and 13010 in 3dmark2k1 at stock speed on the card. (cpu is down a little over 100 mhz from my sig as well... summer :-/.) Do these scores sound right? Seemed to be pretty close based on the ORB comparisons.

Hmm some of the game tests especially Nature seemed to be stuttering a bit, I heard disabling the ATI system tray thing can help that? Any other solutions?

Sorry about this newb post, my searching skills are failing me today.

read the sticky and flash to mufu bios, then overclock madly. Your 3dmark score looks just well :D

Sorry to use this thread, since it has some revelance to 9700 np. My 9500np modded 9700 np does not seem to be helped by the MuFu bios at all. It is still stuck at 330-340 core, 306-308 SGRAM before and after the MuFu bios, in order to be artifact free, with stock cooling, no voltage mod. It has 3.0 ns infineon SGRAM.

Hey Demont, what RAM did you get on that card? I ordered the same card and got Infineon 3.3 stuff.

Yep, I got the same. I was just reporting on the overclocking of my card in that thread. http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showt...threadid=205558

Memory seems to be maxed out around 333, and core is limited by rage3d tweak at 373 currently... I'll need to get the program to let me go higher. :\ (anyone know of a registry tweak or something?)

I hope you have as much luck as I'm having!

Btw, I'm using warp11's Sapphire bios from here: http://www.3dchipset.com/bios/index.php

I thought it was supposed to be a 9700 np bios but my card is now recognized as a 9700 pro.... so I don't know... but it seems to work pretty damn well.

damn, sorry to know you have infineon ram, really nothing anybody can do about it, just chill it to the south pole and pray.

Mufus bios is only tested on r9700nps, but it would be interesting to find out if it helps on the modable r9500nps...

I flashed the softmodded 9500np with the MuFu bios, it works fine. But the MuFu bios does not help overclocking on core and memory at all for the 9500np modded. The max oc without artifact remains at 330-340 on core and 306-308 on SGRAM. Maybe I need a hard mod on voltage in order to get the things higher. Also I am still using stock HSF without ram sink.

I am getting
3DMark03 after mod (331/306) = 5214
3DMark03 after mod (342/310) = 5304
3DMark03 after mod (351/308) = 5379

gr8 scores!! you beat the @$$ outta my puter!!! you are right vmod is your last chance on that card, i say you keep the mufus bios. Im gonna get a cooljag soon, and some aluminium ramsinks at 1coolpc.com, i say you do the same along with the vmod

Okay, after some tweaking and problem solving I finally got a really decent score for a 1600+/9700np

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=943146

3DMark Score 5724 3DMarks
CPU Score 524.0 CPUMarks

1600+@193x9=1737 @ 1.9vcore
9700 @400/332
AGP Bus 70mhz @ 1.6vagp
Memory timings 2.5-3-3-6 @ 2.63vmem

phob and hitech, what did you guys get for CPU score?

[edit] asking because I'm going to be upgrading to barton pretty soon here... i'm wondering how much it would help my score.

jumping from my 1800mhz agoia Y to this 2150MHz dl3tc gave me a 2k points gain in 3dmark2001SE. Take this as a grain of salt, but i think that its better if you get a dl3tc 0319 from svc.com for 65 over a barton 2500 from newegg for 100...

Either one will take you to the 6300+ club with a little luck and high FSB

No, sometimes you just have to have the best. The newest Barton stepping is doing quite well as far as overclocking. About as good as any 1700+. Tack the doubled L2 cache on top of that and its worth it to me.

Besides, the 1700+ at svc is out of stock.

After I play a game for a while at high speeds I will all of the sudden get artifacts all over the place and there will be a bunch of vertical bars going down my screen that will stay there even when i close the game. even if i just restart the computer... the bios screen is all garbled and stuff. I have to do a cold boot.

Lowering the agp bus speed to 66 seemed to help, but it still happened sometimes in 3dmark at high speeds. So I bumped up the AGP voltage to 1.6 and that seemed to take care of it... but then I was playing enemy territory for a while and it happened again... we'll see if 1.7 works. I'm not sure if the agp voltage thing is even helping... does anyone know what this is about? Its not like normal artifacting you get when the memory is just a little high. So I have no idea what it is.

Well I think that proves 3dmark03 is all about the video card.
