New ssd with new os and old hdd

So I have an oem license on my hdd and I want to upgrade to an ssd and get windows 8.1 and I was wondering if I could install the new windows on the ssd and then plug in the old drive with the oem license and then delete the oem os on it and keep using my hdd and everything on it.

Can I do this, if so how would I go about doing it?

Your OEM will be fine on the install to the new ssd. I've changed everything from SSD's to mainboards while using the same oem license and sometimes you have to go through verification with Microsoft but it only takes a minute.
