Not to be picky or anything, it's PWM...Pulse Width Modulation
The fourth wire signals the fan to turn full power on and off very quickly to vary its rpm, short duration pulses for slow speed, longer duration pulses for higher speed, thus why it's called pulse width modulation.
Not picking knits, just teaching....knowing what is good, knowing why is gooder!

Actually, it would be cool to have three fan headers on three edges, and one on the back edge of the motherboard, then you could fully PWM cool the little furnaces they keep throwing at us without always having to use such creative means.
