Getting the i3 530 for my next rig. Will it suffice for HTPC + some gaming use with a 5770 video card?

Yeah it should be just fine, especially since you don't really need more than 2 cores for gaming.

more then fine stang, thought about getting the 540 my self. i mean throw in a H50 and with high oc's possible what isnt to like?

even if you want stock speed,i highly suggest dropping the multi and then upping the Bclock....

arent the i3's memory controllers pretty weak ? i didnt think you could bump memory speeds up that much

I'd say it's a great budget gaming chip, it beats the e8600 in some benches.

You have the best gaming CPU b4$ in my opinion. If he wants to game better to use PII 720, especially C3 stepping when it is out. It cannot OC near as much, but it has good cache, is great performer when a game uses only 2 cores (most of them) and has 3th core when it is needed, and it is more and more often.

For htpc use the i3 is a lot better choise than the PII 720. As for games, increase the resolution to 1920x1024 (1024p) and you'll see that the frame rate will become a lot more equal. Geez, if we were posting something similar in the AMD forum, people would be quick to note that the test was done at low resolution, where the cpu is made the bottleneck instead of the video card.

Would be interesting to see how well these CPUs perform at higher resolutions. I think its still too early to tell, but soon there will be benchmarks comparing them to the E8XXX, i5, and QXXX CPUs.

Ha-Nocri,
a few things, deep linking here is a no no. do you really know why i3 got beat by the X3? last i checked no amd cpu has on-chip video... not world breaking but at least you wouldnt be stuck with X onboard video. you could when the next gen video gets used upgrade that way.
