How do I use an external monitor w/ the laptop closed?

I hooked up an external monitor to my Dell D600. It looks and works fine but when I close the laptop, the screen turns off. How can I set the laptop to not turn the screen off when I close the laptop?

Imagine this is a power saving mode feature, to suspend/hibernate when the lid is closed.

It's set to Do Nothing. The screen turns off but the computer doesn't do anything itself.

You sure? Check the power settings in control panel again. I'm positive there's something in there for this.

check to see if there is a function key to switch modes between laptop display and external display. Ex. my Thinkpad is Fn key and F4
