I just bought a dl380 that i found was used as an esxi host and it was not wiped. it still has esxi 5.0 on it and i wanted to know if the license is tied to the box or still tied to the company that owned it? i don't want to cause any issues and will wipe the box if it is still tied to the company but if it is tied to the box i will use.

thanks for any info!

ESXi is free. To be totally legit, you should probably create an account at VMWare, and get a free ESXi license for the system and replace what it's currently running.
Changing License Keys

To license your product with a different license key:

Log in to the vSphere Client.
Click Home.
Under the Administration section, click the Licensing icon.
Expand the product you want to change the license for.
Right-click on the product and choose Change License Key.
Choose the license you want to use to license the product.

yup, what root said.

ESXI is free :) when you start getting into Vsphere it starts to cost unless you're apart of a group that offers discounts.
