P-III 800 overheating?

Hi there, my friends comp has been acting wiered and most importantly slow from the day he got it. His CPU is P-III 800 or 866 don't really remember now. the problem with it is that the mobo doesn't have the PC health thing to monitor temps and what not, and the computer is very slow, it has TNT2 32MB installed and it even won't run Q3A flewently (128MB RAM) with 800x600 and 16bit. My question is could it be that the computer is overheating and therefore slowing down like the P4, or it can't be the problem, his case is pretty cramped and the PSU hangs over the CPU HSF and propably blocks most of the air. The case is also pretty hot to the touch. What do you think guys? Could it be overheating?

If it's a P-III 800 then it's a 100mhz fsb...same for the memory bus
+ that old and probably not a good brand? TNT2....could result in a poor performance in Q3.

Now about the temps.....try MBM5 to mesure them

Post some more details about that system

hmmm, that would be a little bit hard to tell, as I haven't built the system, but all I know is that its running really hot. The CPU is prolly a 800MHz P-III, so yea a 100MHz FSB. but the same TNT2 card ran perfectly smooth even on a K6-3 I had with res of 800x600 & 32bit with 128meg of ram. I tried MBM5 already and it only shows zeros and the CPU speed, as I mentioned the mobo does NOT support the PC health, it doesn't have temp sensor.

But my question really is about IF the CPU is/was overheating, could it cause it to slow that much down?

The coolest,

A P3 does not 'slow down' like P4s. If it detects it's overheating, it just stops, so if the comp is working slowly (but correctly), it's for another cause... wrong drivers, whatever, but NOT overheat.

Regards
FTC
