It aint always easy installing the new DirectX 8.1b under Windows XP. Thats why ive posted this thread for those of u having trouble in doing so :p

In the "RUN" menu type the path of where the setup file is located followed by "/c" fx:

c:\DX81NTeng.exe /c

The last "/c" allows u to chose where the files are to be extracted.

The folder u chose is where all the installations files are gonna be placed.

Now u have to rightclick on all the *.inf files individually and select "Install" (There are 15 *.inf files) NOTE: You CANNOT select them all at once and Install them at the same time.

When u are done individually rightclicking on all the *.inf files DirectX 8.1b has been installed

Hope this helps some of you...

But users of Windows XP do not need to install DirectX 8.1b? DirectX 8.1 is included in the Windows XP operating system.

DirectX 8.1b installation is for Windows 9x/Me/2000, not Windows XP or later.

DirectX 9 on the other hand, interestingly, needs to be installed on Windows XP and even later OS. Even though versions higher than DirectX 9 are installed on Windows Vista/7/8, there are still DirectX 9 components that need to be updated on those operating systems.

Or here's the web based setup for DirectX 9:
