The "Tumble-Sun" Water Block Concept


Sure, I'll never build one because I'm a cruddy machinist and I lick having my case under 20lb. But I thought the idea exchange might help someone else who's interested.

This would have to be CNC milled OR each fin would have be extruded then soldered onto a disk. Mounting would be through bolt hole arms on the lower plate.
I was originally thinking about using the design heatsink with a large centrifugal blower (because other heatsinks are made for axial fans).
The tumble teeth would add turbulance to the water, thus increasing cooling efficiency. These channels might need to be improve to prevent "dead spots" in the flow pattern. But again, this was originally meant for cohesive air cooling.

Looks puzzling. The in- and outlets on the same spot? This would create a dead zone on the outer areas (or actually all of the wb except the small center) if it would even work at all. Also, extrusion is a pretty poor method to shape it; the density of the material is reduced and thus the thermal properties are degraded... not very good especially with such a relatively large mass of copper on the wb. Just my .02...

there's a plate between the in and out outlets, so the water would have to travel to the sides under the plate and there it gets over the plate and then to the outlet.


looks like pretty complex thingie to me.

Oh yeah now I see it. Hm complex indeed, but it does look more effective than I initially thought at least hehe.

I've worked with a Machine shop before and this could be done on a CNC machine, but the labor cost would be twice the cost of the material itself ($70 an hour, $35 minimum).

I was a few steps away from actually having this design made, but really didn't want to change the appearance of my already lightweight aluminum case.
This would be a REALLY cool project some someone hell-bent on getting insane overclocks with just AIR. And the centrifugal fan I had in mind blasts 175 cfm at only 35Dba (same one that Hoot used for his Hoot-Chute).
