SBLive! 5.1 won't work on 98SE!!!

OK, I went back to 98 and I tried installing the drivers off of my SBLive! cd and it messes up everytime. It gives me a choice between VXD and WDM, whatever that means. I tried both of those and each time it said it couldn't copy files off of the cd that it needed, so I skipped those files and it wouldn't work at all. Then I would get this blue error screen saying something about vxd, and I just don't know what to do. It's getting really frustrating. Then I go to the SoundBlaster site and try to find different drivers and they don't have them. Has this happened to anyone else? What can I do because this is pretty rediculous.

Hmm

I had a friend who had a P3+B440bx who used a SB Live! on a 98SE system, he had no problem with it. He uses it on a kt266a+AMD 1800+ box now.

Yeah, it's really strange because I have used this card with WindowsNT and WindowsXP! By the way the chipset on my mobo is SiS 735, not VIA. I also can't get my modem to work either and I've also had that installed on NT and XP. This just keeps getting weirder.

maybe the problem is simple. as far as i understand that you say the problem could just be about a corrupted installation of the drivers, and the bsod due to it.
since you not got to finish the installation you might not have the option to remove it from the add/remove panel. if you have, try to remove it and re-install the version from the soundblaster website instead. you should not get the problem about reading from the cd then and installation should proceed normally.

if that wont work, the problem described in the viaarena forums may has something to do with yours, once it should not be only about the via chipsets. in this case i would recommend you to email sis or the mainboard manufacter about the problem and expect them to help you out.

Well, I looked all around the soundblaster site and I couldn't find updated drivers for 98, the only ones they have for download are the ones that are optimized for XP. I'll check out that other website real quick, and I also got some updates for my motherboard for the agp, though that still may not help for the soundcard or modem.

Oh and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it does remove everything, but then when I go to reinstall, it does the same thing. It goes and installs everything, then it restarts and says Windows has detected new hardware and that's when it asked for these other files that it can't find on the Sb disk. It's really strange because this has never happened before.

By the way, this is actually a new Windows 98SE. It has a new design on the cd and the floppy startup disk is designed a bit differently. I beginning to wonder if they changed anything in this that is causing me to have all these errors and problems.

Actually they don't...

Here is the page for my sound card running on Win98, and they have no drivers there, just software updates and stuff.

Well, right now, I can't do anything because it won't even start up. I was installing some AGP drivers for my mobo, and now it comes to a black screen with a blinking cursor and doesn't start up. I think I'm going to reinstall windows and try everything again. Thanks for your help. By the way, my model number is SB0100 and that is what I typed in to get to that page that I linked you to. And when Windows starts up it shows this PCI Input device.

The only drivers I can find are the ones for 2000/XP, do you think it would hurt if I tried to install those?

thats the same card i have. if you need any driver files email me at o@otto.as and i can send you them from the cd i got.

if you decide youre gonna try another os installation then why not? get those 2000/xp version but actually they should not work.

the pci input device is right the card, so i cant understand why the heck cant it find the files in your cd. make sure you give it at prompt the root directory so it can search the whole cd.
you need the chipset drivers installed first and sometimes you need them to be installed also after the sound card ones. if youre gonna do a new os installation then read this guide.

Ok, I do not have VIA Chipset, I have SiS 735!!! Anyway, I'm not going to try those XP drivers, I am just reinstalling. And I was using the root directory of the cd. It asks for all these files after installation and it restarts. I don't understand why it is still trying to install more files on restart, it never did that before. Maybe it's another pci device that's interfering and that could only be my modem, so I'll try installing that first this time.

thats not the guide only for via chipsets and thats why i recommended you to read it. if the OS is detecting modem only after installing the sound card drivers it means problem. the os should have detected it before, not only after the sound card drivers be installed.
anyway you should try the modem drivers and check whether that is or not your modem.
also dont forget to install the chipset drivers, which should be done prior to any other thing.

if it still keep asking you for files you cant find in the cd, if you want it i can help you with them, as long as i have them in the cd of my card.
good luck.

Ok, I finally got my sound card installed, and man was it a pain! This time around I wrote down all the files that it couldn't find on the cd and I went and searched on the cd and found all of them. I put those files into a folder on my hdd, and when it asked for them again, it got them!!!

NOw with my modem, I downloaded the generic Pctel HSP56 Micromodem drivers for Win98, but they aren't working right, I get this loud beeping noise when I try to dial to the internet. I think it's about time for an upgrade on my modem though, so I am going to see what kind of controller based modem I can find and get a good deal on.

Thanks for all you help.
