another thing too, where do i actually overclock with riva tuner, in the "Low level hardware overclocking" or the "Driver level hardware overclocking" because both of them are giving me different readings for memory clock speeds and Driver level o/c actually does the moniter clicking indicating that it is changing clock speeds.

Do you have the latest drivers. What video card do you have also. As for the overclocking, it doesnt really matter, both will give the same basic results, but i think most people recommend low-level overclocking.

which card do you have ? alot of them dont actually do fast writes so enabling it in the bios doesnt do anything.

go with the low level for avoiding any compatibility issue with the detonator XP.

that card should have fast writes enabled by default in bios. where does rivatuner report it not to be supported, video card or mainboard northbridge?

north bridge and display adapter both support fast writes but are both disabled and bios says it's enabled

i thought the mx400 had the fast writes enabled by default in bios. then you need to edit it with some video card bios editor and re-flash it with the card. i think then you will get the mainboard support for it enabled.

the mainboard prolly cant keep it enabled because the card hasnt it enabled too.

Darth, you not need only the editor, you need also a flash utility, a program to save your current bios and another to load it temporarilly in the memory so you can check whether will the new one work or not. and you need a dos boot disk too.

if you want my opinion about enabling fast writes, it is: its not worth! it can bring about huge instability for just a tiny performance increase. anyway you can find all you need here and the dos boot disks here at the bottom of the page.

New Nvidia cards disable FW due to stability and timing issues and they cannot be turned on in the MB's bios. Guru of 3D has tools (i think) for modding your cards bios (and voiding your warranty) this is the only reliable way to do it IMO. Use H.Oda's CPUID to see if it turns on when you enable it in bios...it won't.

If you need the tools LMK and I will see what I can dig up. BTW I have enabled FW and upped the core clock in my GPU's bios with a gpu bios editor...VEEERRY dangerous but it can be done.

also FW dont really give you that much more performance. I didit mostly so i could mod the splash screen when the PC starts up and announces the GPU, MGL, etc. I live in a theft prone area...but this baby's tagged to me forever!!! MMmmwwuahahahahaha!!!

My new GF4 Ti4600 is indicating FW and SB adressing are enabled...wow. The Ti500U had both turned off. had to rewrite the bios to activate FW (SBA caused probs)

Fast Writes are not enabled either by mobo bios or tweaking programs (IMO) because Nvidia was having problems with stability. BUT I have found out how to turn it on reliably...it will void your warranty and you could kill your card.

--thus warned--

R. Adams has a utility that allows you to mod your gpu bios. You dump the bios to windows and then (after saving a copy of the original to floppy) make your mods...SBA is not stable IMO so don't do it...but I have found that with a good aftermarket HS that FW's are stable on the GF3. You then save the mod to floppy. there are three tools you will need other than the bios editor...NVFLASH and two supporting components. Boot into DOS...run NVFLASH...then enter the name you have given your modded bios...push through the warnings and flash. When done reboot to windows and then check w/ CPU ID and it will show FW enabled. WHEW!!! that was one looonng paragraph!

If it didn't work you will know rather immediately I think! Then your only recourse will be to try to reflash it again from DOS prompt (if the card is only crippled) or get it factory reflashed.

If you want the tools PM me and I will send them to you or direct you to the site that has them...

You can try to force the EnableAGPFW setting in the Registry by editing the following key (this key name will probably be different on your system, as compared to mine...so I would suggest using RT to set the binary value instead of trying to do it manually):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SYSTEM | ControlSet001 | Control | Video | {7CDD2F16-6610-46AA-87D6-334AF6D8D369} | 0000

Like I said above, this key relates to my system specifically...I just thought I'd include it as a sort of reference. If you do try to add the binary manually, it should be added to the key which includes all your D3d and OGL settings. In order to add the binary value using RT...open RT | "Power user" tab | expand the "System" tree | right click "EnableAGPFW" and select the amber lightbulb...this will add the binary name of: EnableAGPFW to the proper key.

...and RT will automatically add the "Binary Value Data" of 01 00 00 00, much better/simpler than trying to edit the Registry manually IMO.
