File sharing over network, slow?

Im not sure about this because i have never had a router before but if i send mp3's over to my other computer it seems a bit slow. In Sandra, it says my network speed is 11976kbps but no way im sending files that fast. I sent about 150 mp3's yesterday so my brother could listen to them on the other computer and it took about 10mins, thats a bit slow isnt it? When i play Lan games though its ok, i get a ping of about 5-10ms and about the same on the other computer, shouldnt it be less though? Im using an ethernet card and the other pc is using onboard lan, i have a Linksys router with DSL. The other pc is a Duron 1.3ghz with 256mb of PC2100. Any help would be appreciated

What are your speed and duplex settings for your adapters? If one is at 100mb and the other at 10mb, there's the 'problem' If you can set both to 100mb/full duplex that would be ideal. I have seen issues when Nic's are set to auto, they don't sync up or negotiate well.

I tried setting them to 100mb full duplex but it didnt help at all. I set them back to auto negotiation.

Okay do the maths - 300 seconds in 5 minutes right? 700MB right? 300 / 700 = 2.3MBs per second right?

One alternative to the 'your nto realyl running at 100mbit' idea is that your hard drive can only do 2.3MB max (my hard drive does 4!) or your CD-ROM. Quite plausible if you have an old p133 system or something (if unlikely or not).

well according to sandra my HD (both computers on the LAN have the same HD) can sustain a 8 MBPS + (was higher then 8 but ill use that as a min.) transfer rate and the network is supposed to be atleast 10 MBPS sooooo 2MBPS is ssslllooowww hehehe
i should be able to transfer a 700 MB file in a lil over a minute....
unless i am just misunderstanding something which wouldnt exactly be a rare thing
