DVD Burner/Drive recommendation needed

Allright, my knowledge of DVD is pratically nil.

I'm thinking of buying a DVD Burner
I would like to know what type of DVD Burner should I get.

A DVD-RAM/DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R or something.

Which is the most common use nowadays? And what about media, do I have to get specific DVD Media? like DVD-R, DVD+R?

Also is the DVD Media the same as CDR medias? Like I want to burn DVD media to store DATA, not make movies or anything, can I read them like a normal CDR? (On a DVD Drive offcourse)

Or does anyone have any specific sites that have info on this?

Also I'm going to buy a DVD Drive just for reading, any recommendation on which one also?

I'm not going to buy a DVD Burner now, maybe in 6 months time, so if anything new is comming out I can wait for it.

It's a good idea to wait and see which format is going to be the standard. Rumors right now say it's going to be DVD-R. As for a DVD Rom, I would recommend either Pioneer or Lite-On. They seem to get good reviews.

I would say save your money! These things really do suck...my friend has one and says it is the biggest waste of money
Why you ask?

1. the cost a LOT!
2. they take SOOOOO long to burn things (they are like 4x)...they can take hours to burn gbs of info

Those are the main reasons basicly wait a while for them to get faster and less expensive...or simply get a CD-RW, now THEY are worth the money(very little money too)

They are mostly 2x, but that is not calculated the same way as CDR I believe. I think that is the speed relative to the medium, i.e. they will burn 600 quite fast BUT the dvd is much bigger than that hence a longer time. I'd presonally go with dvd-r since it is the most compatible standard (in fact, I am going with it: a new pioneer should arrive soon). As for -ROM, I like my sony DDU1621. Cheap, OEM and good.

Wait for the new DVD Writers to arrive in a few months. They will support all five formats of dvd and write at 4x speed which is actually 36x speed in cd time. Currently dvd drives max out at 2x and 2.4x

DVD CD
1x = 9x
2x = 18x
4x = 36x
8x = 72x

At 4x you can finish 4700 MB of data in 15 minutes. That equals about seven 650 MB CD's in 15 minutes. So DVD Writers are certainly not slow and are on there way.
