Sounds like a waste of bandwidth for both Skip and us 56k’ers. And from what I have heard, only senior members are aloud to advertise their sites, so I don’t see what use banners would be. Avatars are bad enough for my slow connection, over at the AA:O forums, load times are minutes just for one page because of those stupid sig images. I hope this never becomes legal on the forums.

Thats my $0.02

well first of all, they are not banners. If you have ever been apart of a gaming forum, you would know that sigs are a big part of it and such.

As for taking up bandwithc and slowing 56kers down, well if you look in your options you can make it so you dont have to see thoes kinds of things. SO you should take a look in there, and make it so you can see peoples avatars and maybe it wouldnt be so slow.

i don't like the pics, all they do is break up threads , as most are unsightly large. however sigs can help especially is a person has their specs in them as it allows for quick assesment of a problem. besides you can fit a lot of info in an avatar...

I just don't think that Skip is going to allow pics in your sig, he's already paying enough in bandwidth costs already. Plus, the 56K'ers might like to look at the avatars without having a bunch more pics pop up in each post by everyone.

-------- I beleive that FoldingAddict is trying to tell you that only seniors can have links in their sigs that don't pertain to something sponsored by this site. Sorry, but that is a forum rule. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, just trying to keep you from having any trouble with the mods.

But what's important is that not everybody WILL, which means that the pictures have to be sent from the server, which means that bandwidth will go up. A lot.

Besides, we make the forums friendly to EVERYBODY, not just those that have fast connections. We want everybody to be able to look at everything we have to offer without slowing to a crawl.

Besides, we already allow you a 120x120 100k avatar. That's HUGE.

It's messy for one, and it can get out of hand and more moderating will have to be done. I believe you can get in trouble for this as you are using other people bandwidth for a huge site. We wouldn't want to get in trouble now would we

Yes it is and avatar are responsible for a huge part of the bandwidth. I remember Skip took them off to see how big they where and I think he found that they were maybe (22%???) of the bandwidth. I don't remember exactly so feel free to tell me if you know the exact number. I just remember something in the twenties.d Anyway they take up alot of bandwidth.

My opinions:

1) If you can't say it in text, then it isn't worth saying
2) Text can be filtered, Images can't as easily be filtered
3) The databases are 40GB+. 30GB of that is images.
4) Bandwidth costs are thousands of dollars a month. The site is bearly breaking even. Adverts bring in very little money.
5) Why should I (and hundreds of other 56k users)have to sit for ages waiting for your sig pic to load up?
6) Sig pics are clunky - they take up space - and IMO pointless
7) "You can make it so that you don't have to see sigs" - What if I only don't want to see sigs with pics in them, but want to see text sigs? I will then have to dig around in my user settings turning them on and off.
8) Sig pics are merely an accessory, there is no dire need for them. Text sigs serve a purpose, as can avatars (recruitment for DC projects for example).

i used to have a pic in my sig on my other message boards... now that i can't have one here, i actually like it better. it really interferes with the thread.

since then i've taken away my pics on my sigs elsewhere cause i don't like them there anymore.

Like Thelemac said, Avatar's are allowed to be large here, and that is where you should express yourself!

Take mine for example! Everything I like about music!

I think pics in sigs would make the forums lose their sharp and clean look.

I like to have the avatars visible because I recognize people that way. I can quickly skip down to a post a really want to read just by looking at the avatars, and not being forced to read the names. NAS is right; threads get really broken up with big barely compressed images taking up precious screen real estate. Lets not give skip any more costs just so we can put worthless images in our sigs.

thats the same with sigs, but I guess you guys have never been apart of a gaming forum, so I guess it wouldn't be good here. Although avatars are about the same as a sig...

I really like how 6 people said the same thing the person said above them, its great.

And as for removing the link from my sig area, I don't believe I have to, its not doing anything, or taking this forums bandwitch up, you don't even have to click it if you dont want to, so please calm down.

Hey Tyler, all in all, this is still one of the best places on the web to hang out. Some of the rules are a little extreme, but they are for a reason. Not everyone has to agree with them, but everyone has to abide by them. If it's that important to you to advertise whatever it was you wanted to have in your sig, create a avatar with the website addy in that. Maybe that will be allowed. Links in the sig are a seniors and mods right to have based on their dedication and service to the forums. Maybe after a while, you can get to that point yourself and then you can put that link down there. Don't rate this place just on it's rules, give us all an honest attempt to prove to you why this is (as we all refer to it) the greatest place to hang and learn. Within 6 months or less, you'll forget all about these little issues.
