The AX-478 does have a copper bottom. I think they gave you the wrong heatsink. I think Thermalright does make an all alluminum one too but it's not the 478.

The base is nickel plated, but is copper. I guess if you really wanted you could grind down a corner of it to see. The nickel is to stop corrosion and stuff like that.

I thought the same thing when I recieved mine in the mail. I just lapped it, and all the aluminum/nickel came off.

I don't know if lapping really does much, unless your heatsink is really warped to begin with. You might see a degree or two difference, which means your processor will last 20 years instead of 21.

cool, but i still think that swiftech MCX4000 has better performance and not so much noise against this, but more $, so still this dude looks okay

I guarantee you will get better results with the Ax-478 over the Sunflower

The AX-478 is the best air cooled heatsink i've ever used in terms of performance and ease of installation and removal.

PS when I lapped the heatsink to expose the copper, I didnt get a significant difference in temps.

Thanks Sam, thats exactly what I was hoping to hear, I have had a hard time keeping this 1.8 Nw stable @ 2.4,and I think temps have alot to do with it( don't really wanna add more Vcore)@ 1.7 now, although temps are ok, they could be better

"I guarantee you will get better results with the Ax-478 over the Sunflower" I am not to sure on that....given the same cfm fan and such. Give the sunflower a 80cfm or even a delta 68 and test those two heatsinks and i think the sunflower would win. You do have to mod sides of the fan to get a 80mm fan to fit on a sunflower though. But if you already have the heatsink i would give it a try.

I would not judge the ax478 with my system. for some reason my system runs hotter then every1 esle. Im having the worse luck with mine. system 33c cpu idle 45c load 55c volts 1.7v in bios but reads 1.63v in the hardware monitor.

I have tried all these

-All temps taken by the in socker thermistor while at full load-

*Stock Intel Heatsink -48*average at load

-Pros: Its quiet, and a great heatsink for you grandparents
-Cons:there are better heatsinks for overclockers

*AVC Sunflower -45*average at load

Pros:Better performance than the stock Intel heatsink

Cons: The fan is to loud and its that irritating shriek like sound
-There are better choices available

*Volcano 7 Plus (fan at Low rpm) 45*(Med fan speed)43* High 42*

A very good cooler

Pros: Cools very well and an excellent choice for both AMD and Intel overclockers

Cons: A little on the pricey side

(additional note) The Volcano 7 Plus should always be checked if you have a P4 and possibly turned 180 degrees to make sure its seated correctly and making direct contact with the IHC.

I reiterate, mounting the heatsink and dismount it to look at the thermal paste imprint to see if its seating properly on a socket 478 system)

*AX478 (w/68cfm Delta on a Rheostat at 4000rpm 41-42* average at load, with the Delta Screaming 5200 rpm 39-40 at a medium rpm

The Ax-478 has a very nice Clip, easy to use.
Its got a rigid side and on the other side of the clip has a nice hinge mechanism.

Pros:
-Exceptional performance
-Not expensive and is my top pick for socket 478 Overclockers.
-One of the best clip designs to date in my opinion
-Won't break your bank for almost h20 like performance

Cons: None
But If your like me and like a quiet pc, hooking the Delta to a Rheostat is a wise move

PS I have seen people slap on a Delta 68cfm to a Sunflower and it still doesnt perform with the top dogs like the Ax-478, alpha's and Swiftechs

Not only that but the Sunflower is a flawed design, the base doesn't make full contact with the IHS

I stand by my comments that i guarantee you the Ax-478 will perform better than an AVC sunflower even with a high CFM fan

Here's some picks of the sunflowers flawed design in this review Joe did

just a comment on the V7+ this thing clips on real ease. but, taking it off can be a challenge. I used a flat head screw driver to pry it off. I agree, the ax478 is a has a better mounting clip design for the P4. I dont think its easier to mount, but its is easier to take off. BTW its not that hard at all to mount.
