166 Mhx FSB for dual?


yo, has anybody heard anything about amdīs plans for the 760mpx chipset, will it have support for the upcoming 166 mhz FSB cpus or will AMD put all effort in the new Hammer products?

I would guess that it'll stay at 133FSB until Hammer. Since the 2400+ and 2600+ Thoroughbreds will still have 133FSB, the MP versions of them will too. Also we have yet to see even a MP 2200+.

My guess is that by the time AMD would be ready to migrate to a 166mhz FSB on a revised version of the 760MPX chipset, a Hammer SMP chipset will be out or close to release date.

I say this because AMD seems to be even slower in their SMP department than they are everywhere else. For good reason.

This is pure speculation on my part though.

The problem is more like the memory speeds.

Official memory specs are still at 133FSB.

Couldnīt BIOS upgrade support that the CPU and mem is at different frequenzies by a fixed divider?

But this is a dual system you're talking about. These mobo's tend to not be as rich in leading edge features and emphasize stability above all(well, most do).

Besides, running the proc and mem at different speeds add extra latency.

Look how long we waited after the introduction of the original Athlon to get the SMP Athlons.... don't expect to be on the bleeding edge with an SMP system. If you're one of those people you should probably be looking at a single CPU system anyway.
