Nothing but a raid option.

The "E" is the onboard RAID controller chip which allows you to run two hard drives as one. the most popular raid configurations are striped or mirrored. with the RAID setup your operating system will see the two hard drives as one. Striped will give you great HDD performance, whereas mirrored will act as a data backup/guarentee system.

thanks. is there any performance difference between the two motherboards? i also noticed after doing more research that the E version has ieee and lan along with the raid, and the regular old p4b533 does not.

No, I don't think it was worth it myself. I really wished I had bought the P4B533 bare board without all of the extra junk. I tried to hoook my rig up to the striped raid config but it only ran 1 day before one of my drives went out. I don't use the firewire or the raid. But I do use the on board LAN, thats kinda nice.
