Hard time overclocking..

Well guys, even tho my sig says other wise, these are my new spec..

Athlon XP 1900+ (loocked)
Epox 8k3a+
Corsair PC3200 C2
ThermalRight SLK-800
Gigabyte Radeon 9700
Antec 550 True Power..

Anyway, the problem is that even the slighest oc i try makes my system lock up..
This is what i tried..
First i set mem settings to Turbo, tried running 3dmark and locked..
Raised the mem volt by +10, tried it again and still crashed..
Went ahead and raised the fsb to 140 and ran 3dmark.. crashed..
raised the cpu volt.. still crashed.. you get the point..
On memory volt i went all the way to 2.90 and still crashed.

Now what i need to know is what might be causing the problems? Cause while ocing, i saw a nice 20-30 fps boost in performance... Also wanna let ya know that i dont have such problem while the system is not overclocked..

KT333 boards are very iffy around 140-150fsb especially the Epox. They benefit when you are running higher than 166fsb. Anyways, what voltage did you try? 140fsb may require 1.85v if not higher. What are your temperatures at load?

While idle the temp is 39c, under load using prime95 for a couple of mins is 45c, my 5v+ on idle is 4.92 and on load is 4.89 (kinda low for 550w psu?)
When i tried 140fsb, i only upped the volt on the cpu a tab bit..
But even tho, why cant i set the memory timings to something faster without it crashing? :-(

at 140mhz even w/ the bug that the Epox mobo might have, the RAM speed will only be 174mhz, something that a PC3200 CAS2 ram prolly should be able to cope with.
What is the stepping of your, the thing is if you got an old/crappy stepping this might be your problem, cause the temps seem to be OK.
Athlo try setting RAM settings to lowest, and try to overclock and run 3dmark, if it doesn't crash then the ram u got isn't that good, if it still crashes, it propably the CPU, try setting the vcore to 1.85v and try again

Yep,

I have to echo what the guy with the 3ft Sabre says ;-)

My KT333 ( MSI ) always locks over 140 but when i get over 160 it will work again - guess cos its closer to 33mhz pci.

That would mean unlocking tho in most cases.

Goodluck

Thx for the input guys.. Here what i tried so far..

First i raised the fsb to 140, left the volt to default and ran 3dmark.. Dint crash :-), ran it again to make sure and worked fine..
Then i put back the fsb to default (133) and raised the mem timing to turbo, also left the volt alone and ran 3dmark..
Ran it 2 times and no crash.. good.. :-)

Then i went ahead, left the timing to Turbo, raised the fsb to 140 and tried 3dmark... Crashed.. tried rasing volt, crashed..
Raised the volt up 2 1.80 on cpu and 2.70 on mem, but still crashed.. Any ideas? Also, dont ya think my 5+ line is kinda low?

Last thing, is it possible that the mobo might be faulty/damaged? Cause i had a short circuit 2 month ago that damaged my cpu and ram.. :-(

the epox 8k3a is the absolute worst hunk of s**t i have ever dealt with in my life. it is unstable as hell and many many many people have also had this prob. try getting a new bios update if you want but i doubt that will fix it cause epox never ends up fixing any of there problems.... ughh i shudder at thinking at all of the time i wasted with that board.

if i was you i would rma the board and get a Abit KX7-333(R version if you want raid). MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more stable in every way possible, more tweaking options, faster board. the only downside is the vcore is up to 1.9v only (i know it says 1.85v in the bios but this board overvolts highly in the vcore and ram) but that is fine for most air coolers.

Why dont you just skip the troublesome fsb range and try to start it at 160fsb+. I managed to get my xp1600 to 170fsb on and 8KHA+ MB, w/PNY 2100 ram. It just might work...

Also, don't set the mem settings at "Turbo" set it at normal and set the mem settings yourself manually (copy the settings used in turbo mode). I got that tip from the corsair forums help guy (http://www.houseofhelp.com/v2/forumd...hp?forumid=131)

I went ahead and unlocked my CPU.. well, kinda.. only some multipliers work.. :-( i tried re-doing it several time but no matter how many times i did it, it wouldnt work.. so i gave up and left them alone.. Instead now running at 170fsb @ 10 = 1700.. :-)
100 more mhz which is ok.. I was aiming for 1800, but it wouldnt go thru.. :-(
Also did what airw0lf said and even tho i'm not sure if it improved anything, i'm gonna keep it like that..
Only prob now is that my temp went up by almost 5c :-( or it could be that the artic silver hasent set in yet.. *Hopefully...*

what?

okay.im really new to overclocking but i just spent a whole lot of money buying all of the components that i felt would be right. i am very happy with the results of my epox 8k5a2+...although i cannot run my samsung 2700 at turbo. but hey it isn't rated to run like that anyway.. so i don't really mind.(i went cheap on the ram because it is so expensive right now)...anyway yeah you need to skip straight to 166fsb...i never messed with the lower fsb's cause i don't like having the off pci/agp mhz..yet... im perfectly stable ..prime 95 torture test sfor hours. but it may be just that the turbo settings on that board don't runction right but im not complaining because my first overclock ever is about 350 mhz and smooth running. just try the "fastest" instead of turbo. i can't run like that either.
