120gxp drives die because of heat???

i have a question which i coundnt get an answer for searching the forums....can someone help?

i have a 120gxp80 gig drive, and think that i know all about the problems the 60gxp and the 75gxp had...was it just a heat problem?

i dont think that i have to worrx about my 120gxp drive because heat shouldnt be such of an issue here...or is it??

i am cooling my drive really well an therefor think that i can sleep well....

back to the main question, were those inreliability issues a heat problem or a manufacturing problem???

thx 4 your time.... i really wanna know this....

I think that all of the GXP series should be cooled JUST in case....there is obvioulsy heating problems in the smaller ones so why wouldn't there be in the even bigger ones...I say don't risk it and put some quiet 25CFM fan blowing on it...you do not need a lot of power since the heatspreader on HDDs work so well...I got just one 50CFM fan cooling my 2 80GB WD "SE"'s and I touch them and they are COLD....

I also have a 60gxp with no cooling on it....it gets HOT...burned myself twice with it...then I put a little 25CFM fan blowing on it and now it is pretty cool....

Hi,

Anything we say may be *speculation*. Really, no one knows.. well, maybe some hd guru there in IBM knows what happened, but it has not been made public.

In any case, if you ask me, I don't think the problems were really related to heat... I am more inclined to think about :

- Either bad manufacturing batches (i.e defective components?)
- Or a firmware problem causing platter stress when rw heads where flying over the same spot for long inactivity times... just because this is what is fixed by the firmwares for 60GXPs that appeared some months ago
- And my last bet is damage caused by vibration...

In any case, don't think you have to worry for your 120GXP (but keep an updated backup safe, as with any other drive). People say this drives have been around short,... but these where launched 10 months ago already, and the number of public failing
reports in the net is *extremely* low compared to most other brands.

Regards
FTC

So you guys mean that if an ibm is cooled it will last longer? Cool, I already have a waterblock for my hdd, which is going to be a 120gxp (don't know about the capacity, still deciding) + a 80mm fan blowing across it (it does not cool anything for now)
