Unhappy Fluctuating Power Supply?!

Evenin' Ladies and Gentlemen...

Power supply question. When I set my vcore voltage to 1.7 in my bios and then check it with MBM in windows it reports 1.75 + or - .01 volt. But when I put it under a load, i.e., Prime95, in lowers to 1.65 and jumps around a little.

Is this normal?

My power supply is a Future Power 400W. I have no experience with this brand. I was wondering if money spent on a Enermax or Antec would be beneficial or if drops in voltages under loads like this are normal.

Thanks in advance.

If it is fluctuating that much under it is not a good sign. I have never heard of that brand either. How is your 5v at load? I think buying an Antec True Power would be your best option. They are probably the best PSUs besides PC&P(which cost a fortune). Lately the quality of Enermax PSUs has declined, I would stay away from them. Just ask Yodums about his.

Yea, this one reply alone has done it for me. I'm going to go pick up my ANP tomorrow. Best Buy has a 431W model for $99. A little high but it will satisfy my need for instant gratification!

Thanks

stay away from the true power! i have been thru 2 without success. mine would dive from 1.58vcore to 1.48 vcore under load and blue screen on me. tried another and voltages were awful, even reading them at the moldex with a volt meter. i would not give a nickel for an antec true power!

I have 2 True Power PSUs and my experience has been quite the opposite. These are great PSUs and I know most people will agree with me. Second to only PC&P, and most people are not ready to spend $180 on a PC&P 475w PSU!

Are you using a ATI 9700? I have read somewhere that these vid cards are hell on psu's. Just the other night I ran accross a thread on another forum (while OCers was down) that had tons of info about this issue. I'll try to find a link for you and others that may be interested.

The only thing an Enermax is good for IMO.

Well, I do recommend the Antec SmartPower PP412X. It is affordable and it performs very well It comes with adjustable pots so say your 5v or 12v is low, you can turn it a tad bit and hover right over it instead of being below spec. There's also a 3.3v pot which adjusts the power going to that line. This power supply has been tweaked by me to get a perfect 5v rail and on my previous Enermax with a lower clock same voltage, I got 4.76v under load. Me and GeneticDrift have the OPPOSITE feedback about Antec and Enermax! LOL. The True Power's are good too, they would one of the main PSU's I'd go with as well. All lines are ran independently instead of 5v and 12v sharing the same lines.

PS: Have you checked to see whether your motherboard has problems with reading the voltages? Also, you are using the AUX, and 12v connectors meant for the P4 right? So the power runs from the 12v not the 5v.
