DVD-Rs and HP 200ix

Anyone tried using a DVD-R (not DVD+R) on an HP 200ix? They're not supposed to work, but maybe they do??

And when I put my DVD+R and +RW in Nero, it says they are 4.4gb, but they're advertised as 4.7gb...?

DVD+R are useless, they are less popular than the DVD-R series.

Also new DVD-ROM drives coming out support DVD-R than DVD+R it seems.

You can actually find that DVD+R are cheaper than DVD-R like 50 bucks and DVD-RAM also just as cheap, unlike DVD-R.

I dont know why Sony is even bothering with the DVD-R/DVD+R series all in one. They should just let DVD+R die so the rest of us can let DVD-R be the official format for DVD.

I've found that the DVD+R are more expensive...

I really thought that this burner did all of them until I opened the box I'll make due though...

The multiformat Sony is at
http://www.sonystyle.com/home/item.j...d=50044&type=o

You can preorder now, for a Nov 1 ship date.

The issue in the DVD Recordable format wars is whos patents are used. This will translate into billions of dollars for the winning camp.

I think Sony is throwing in the towel, the only advantage DVD+R had over DVD-R was speed (2.4 vs 2.0) and now DVD-R does 4x burning, well that blows DVD+R out of the water.

Not to mention the superior performance of DVD-R in consumer equipment.

I was at bestbuy (something I equate to a hades level torment) and some poor fool had just bought an HP DVD+RW and couldn't figure out how come nothing he owned would play the disks.

The clerk was trying to sell him on more software, and I clued him in on the format differences and that he need to check if his equipment was compatable with DVD+RW.

Paul

DVD+R is not useless, it is far better than DVD-R for file storage

True, but one of the DVD writeable attractions is the ability to play media in consumer equipment. In my "walk into Best Buy, Ultimate Electronics, and Circuit City and try a DVD-R and a DVD+R in every player test" I found that DVD-R had better compatibility.

If you want a large storage medium that handles file backup and restore well then there are storage only mediums that are faster then DVD+R or DVD+RW, such as WORM and Magneto Optical (9.1 GB)

What's the difference between the two? Will DVD+R store more? I've been thinking about maybe one of these day's picking up a DVD burner (like in 18 year's when the last of 3 kid's should be out of the house ). But have'nt done the research yet. So I'd be interested in knowing the difference.

well, If you're making movies, get a "-" drive. If you're doing mostly data disks, get a "+" drive. Or Wait for the Sony burner that does both standards... DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW.

its just that, if I burn a DVD disc, I want to use a DVD-ROM than the burner itself to get the data out. And since majority of
DVD-ROM have higher support to READ DVD-R than DVD+R, I would choose a DVD-R burner anyday.

I mean would you use your CDRW burner as everyday use to play your CDs? I would buy a CDRW and a CDROM Drive so one is only used to burn the other to just play, so that the lifespan of the CDRW is a lot more.

You also have to think, for spending 200+ bucks on a DVD Burner, you want that Burner to last and pratically all manufacturers give you only 1 year warrenty on it which is quite low. Its better to spend 40 bucks to get a DVD-ROM drive to use to read a DVD-R than use the Burner. (Don't forget your everyday dirt from your Burned DVD disc used on a DVD Burner might pick up the dirt and cost you a coaster intead.

I have Pioneer's DVR-104 (OEM Version of the AO4)
Storage is 4.4gb in movie format and DVD-RW. If your just using it for storage it holds 4.7gb. So far I have not had any compatability issues with any of the dvd players I've used. I say DVD-R is the way to go.

Hey where'd you get it and how much? Keep me updated on that drive, I was thinking of going to that one as well.

Though, I recently have gotten my HP200i working properly, it would be nice to have the ability to work in all formats.
