if you use a regualr USB 1.0 HDD the speed will be VERY VERY slow...USB 1.0 can do about 9mbp/s which in turn is about 2.5-3MBp/s (or somthing like that...not sure on the conversion) so you will be waiting a LONG time to copy things...and I would think you would ahve to install drivers also on every comp you use it on...

If you get the 2.0 HDDs then you will be fine...there are almost as fast as a regualr HDD(only a couple MBp/s slower and not noticable)....but I think drivers once again plague these things

I have several varieties. Ranging from USB 1.1 to 2.0. Speed for me is not much of an issue, since I use them for image storage. Depending on the hardware there are DOS drivers available to use with Ghost or Drive Image. Drivers are sometimes a problem with older or alternative OS.

I may be biased on the speed, since I've used PCMCIA and parallel port HDDs too.
