ECC stands for error checking and correction. This ram is far more stable than regular ram, because it can correct most errors. ECC registered puts in a buffer so that it puts less demand on your memory controller. This, too enhances stability. The disadvantage to this is that it decreases memory performance and makes memory more expensive. Additionally, ECC usually lags behind in speed... for example, the fastest regular memory is rated pc3500, while the fastest ECC available is at pc2700.
This type of memory is best utilized in dual systems which need the stability and aren't huge overclockers. Most dual motherboards require this type of ram.
