is the ESS Allegro Audio any good? i have it integrated on my compaq mobo. i want to get maybe new 2.1 speakers and i just want to know if i will need to upgrade this piece O' s*** to?

It's a good trouble-free soundblaster compatible chip. This is the one integrated in my system also, and I have not had a single compatibility or unstability problem with it in 2 years.

what do u mean by sound blaster? and will this chip work with 2.1 speakers?

He means sound blaster compatible. That was really big in DOS years, but it really doens't mean jack now. Still, most companies say their card is sound blaster compatible just to say it itmeets a basic feature set.
