Video Capture...

First off, I hope this is the right forum :/

I'm not big into video cards, but I just read an article about ATI's upcoming release of the 9700 AIW card, one they will keep on par with the specs of the current 9700. It appears as if the video capture capabilites of it are great. And since I have been planning on getting a higher end vid card, coupled with the fact that it comes with video editing software, and other goodies, the package as a whole sounds appealing.

This is where you all com in

What cards Should I be looking at for this type of thing? I'd just like to be able to capture images from the tv/dvd/vcr for my comp to act as a recorder in and of itself.

Thanks alot for your time.

BTW You all are great. First forum I've been to where the people are knowledgeable AND extremely nice. Always a warm welcome for a new member.

Thanks again.

The R9700 AIW is the mac-daddy of VIVO cards. It might well be overkill if you're not an EXTREME gamer, and plan on using the plethora of options available on the VIVO side of the card.

Both ATI and Nvidia offer other cheaper crads, that offer many of the same features. Although, ATI seems to offer a better VIVO solution than Nvidia(more features, seems to have better playback quality).

Have you looked at the less-expensive R8500AIW or R7500AIW, or the Geforce4Ti VIVO?

I think all of them are great in theoir own right- the R9700 being at the top. Whether it justifies the price sort of depends on how much you need all the features.

Get seprate cards, a 9700Pro and a TV Tuner card will probably work better and be cheaper.

I can't say this for sure, because I don't know what the 9700 AIW will retail at, but AIWs are usually a bit over priced.

The ATI press release I read said $500 US.

But the other AIW cards, prices are dropping.
An 8500 AIW may be a good deal

I'll agree with the Noob. You can get a name-brand TV tuner card that includes recording software for $50-70 on Newegg.

AIW cards also offer less game performance than straight video cards, and have fewer overclocking options.

Great feedback....

So now I'm left asking, what is a good name brand TV Tuner? Or just pint me to some reviews and I'll decide for myself.

Looks like I'll be heading for seperate cards atm.

I would get a 9000Pro AIW because it has the same AIW chip as the 9700 with the same features with pretty darn good gaming performance for a much lower price maybe aroun 200$

If you want the best gaming card on the market get the 9700 pro.

If you want a great gaming card for a better price get a Gefore 4 Ti4200-4600 or an 8500LE card.

For TV Tuners, I have a Leadtek WinFast TV2000 XP and really like it. There are better cards like haupuage (spelling is way off), but you'll pay a bit more. Definitly use DScaler to watch TV because the quality is MUCH better than what ever software your card will come with.

That AIW 9000 sounds pretty good, is it as good for games as the 8500?
