Refresh rates

Hi
My monitor supports 75hz at 1600x1200 but if I set to 75 on my desktop I can notice a flicker. If I leave the refresh at 85 (my norm for desktop apps) will this overdrive my monitor in games at 1600 or will they default to 60 hz anyway.
Thanks
Andy

I don't get completely what you are asking.

Whatever you set your monitor at, that is what it'll run at, in a game our out. Why would you want to have it at 75Hz at any time when you could have it at 85Hz... doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe if you reworded it, I ro someone else could answer you question better.

In most OSs the monitor will run at "optimal" refresh rate, which means the highest your monitor can support at the resolution. So if you run your desktop at 640x480 @ 100hz then play a direct 3d game at 1600x1200 and your monitor can only support 60hz at that res then that is what it will play at. Most monitors have their own menu which you can access by pushing one of the buttons on the front of your monitor, usually that will display the refresh rate so you can see what RR you are running at in game or on your desktop. Also most monitors will simply display a message saying "monitor is out of scan range" or something similar if the refresh is too high for that res, so you shouldnt have to worry about it.

WinXP (and 2000 I think) play all games (direct 3d and open GL) at a mere 60hz regarless of what res you are running at or what your desktop refresh rate is. You will need a refresh rate fixing tool to change that (i use refresh force). The desktop refresh should still run at whatever rate you pick though.

You can also run dxdiag and click the more help tab then click override and enter a refresh rate to run all direct 3d games at but that can cause problems if you enter 75hz for example then playing a game at 1600x1200 will still try to use 75hz even if your monitor cant support it, so you will get the out of range message.

2000 and XP both have that 60hz problem. XP's service pack fixes it, but for 2000 or if you just don't want the service pack use RefreshForce. Just know the refresh limits of your monitor or you could eventually end up damaging it.

well nm i found out that it was just the moniter right beside the tower catches all the interfeirence that the computer parts put off and when i mooved the moniter away it was fixed.

If i were you i would not go higher than these settings

(800x600) 60,70,75,85,90,

(1024x768) 60,70,75,85

(1280x1024) 60,70,75

(1600x1200) 60,70,75

all those are the refresh rates that are pretty safe on each resolution dont go higher than what i showd 75 is the best refrehs rate overall tho

Not sure

Basciaclly I want my monitor to run at 1024 desktop at 85hz and no more than 75hz at 1600 when running games. my monitor supports 100hz at 1024 but I don't want to push it this far under normal conditions. i also don't want to switch between the two when playing games.
is there a way to run 85 desktop and 75 games automatically?
Cheers
Andy
