what compressor is in a cars aircon?

Hi all,
I was thinking of getting a small compressor... Does anyone know what compressor is in a cars aircon? And if it would be possible to use it like a Vapochill system (Direct CPU cooling).

Sorry friend, but a car's air conditioner is powered by the car's engine. So unless your going to power it (turn the pulley) with at least a lawnmower engine, it wouldn't work.

Welcome to the forums, though!

Yeah you could get an alectric motor and mount it on a piece of wood technically. That would be interesting, they were powerful compressors too.At least 1hp.Usually more than that, since they have to cope with so much heat....

nada takes up to 25hp to turn a car air. compressor.

I dont remember saying a little fan motor will turn it..
Also 25hp seems kind of off.Seems like it would take like 5hp, got a graph or anything that tell how much hp they really take?
You can get some bigass electrical motors too...By the way I never said its practical

Actually its more like 10HP...

either way, it'll require a rather large electric motor and modification of the front pulley to be locked instead of clutched. Seen a few of these discussions before.

Plus you're still gonna need all the required bits and ends that a standard A/C unit requires, except you'll have to rebuild most of it or aquire them from a standard A/C unit as the evap, condensor, and other things are scattered all about the front of a vehicle and aren't designed for space constraints as a normal unit is. Such as the condensor coil is up front in front of the radiator, the evap is sitting there in the engine bay with tubing sticking out randomly like a octopi.

Yes all that stuff is easy to do, but getting a sufficient electrical motor is the main thing...
What do you mean the evap has tubing sticking out randomly?2 pipes isnt oxtopi
I just pulled the rear evap on a suburban, free txv/evap and dual ****ty scroll cage fans....

Thats the rear evap, i'm talking the one in the engine bay We replaced one on some GM vehicle...it didn't even fit up right.

But yes, the electric motor is a tough one, cause you either go for a AC motor which will proably heat up quite a bit...or a DC motor that will require its own power supply. Since 10HP is like...a lot of amps...and don't let it stall cause that'll shot up into the triple digits.

Yeah I was just saying I pulled the rear evap, just a useless bit of info.Same kind of thing as the front air though, stupid aluminum garbage and those damn compression fittings hahaha

Yeah you could find an a/c motor if you really wanted to waste a ton of power on something like this, need something with an autoshutoff too...10hp still seems like a ton....Its not that hard to turn them, maybe it draws 10hp from a car, but if you "geared" it right with an electric motor it shouldnt draw that much....

I'll stick with 110 compressors

Trust me...its 10 or more...

Cause in my car, I have no horsepower what so ever...and I fixed my A/C and had it turned on...I could barely move. So off went the A/C and I had the little bit of power again.

Thats the main reason hard core racer type people get rid of all rotating accessories on the engine's crank.

Yep they do rob alot of HP from cars, but what I am saying, it seems like you could run it geared right with a electrical motor...

cool thanks for the info... so much for that idea. Shows how much I know about cars. he he.
I guess i'll keep looking.

There's got to be a way to gear an electric motor to turn one. Think about it a little (not to flame anyone of course) but a 4 ton unit for a house runs on a 3HP AC motor with a starting circuit.

There is a way, but to me and some others, its a waste of engineering effort for the most part.

It can be done, but for the outcome...some don't think its worth it.

(Especially since there is a humidifer in my possesion I have yet to "transform")

a humidifier or dehumidifier

a humidifier just evaporates water into the air

a dehumidifier uses a phase system to cool the air and remove moisture

actually it depends on the compressor type as many cars have them and at what rpm Ive done many many dyno tests on cars....and up to 25 hp put it on avg or whatever but when a cars ac compressor comes on especially in a four cylinder car going up hill you can feel the drag.......go to any performance wholesaler like jegs or summit raceing and they even make switches to keep the ac compressor off at full throttle they can supply you with dyno sheets.

dehumidifier, sorry.

My dad even offered it to me for that purpose, but I'm kinda iffy about the seals that are currently in it. But it works. But that'll wait for some time.

Something my father mentioned, since he knows quite a bit more about A/C and the like than I do. If I went and looked at it I could proably explain it, but i'm lazy. But it was only a concern if I emptied the gas that is in it and swapped it up to a current(such as crappy 134a).
