Question What exactly is folding?

Hi everyone, I'm curious to know what exactly is folding? I have seen a lot people not only on this site, but others talking about it, but I don't have a clue as to what it is. Just curious, thanks for your time

DNA has the instructions to string together amino acids in sequence to make a chain that is then "folded" by a machine that turns it into a specific proteins cell. These are folded in such a way that they can make any living cell, be it hair, eye, frog tongue, whatever, out of the few amino acids we know of.

What we do is use our computers in a distributed fashion to have enough power to collectively unfold the proteins and help Stanford gather information that could lead to the cure of several diseases like cancer, parkison, alzheimer's etc. We are trying to figure out how things are sequenced and why and how they get coded in that sequence. One big computer could not be built to be able to process this information alone.

So...we volunteer our spare CPU cycle to process the infomation. Folding takes the lowest priority in you rig so you never see an issue with you rig slowing down or improtant program not running cause the cpu is folding.

This is for the better of use all. Give it a try, you will become addicted like the rest of us.

WOW! If it might help to find a cure for any disease, I'm in!

I'm putting a new machine together probably Monday. I'm just waiting for my KD7 and my 1600 XP to get here, but I'm definitely interested. How would I go about starting this? TIA.

There is no need for the (www.overclockers.com) that used to be needed in the first F@H but now we have team #s to differentiate. SO all he has to do is put in his name and Put in 32 for the team #. http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

at the bottom of this link you can see if someone else has the name you want. Good luck!

Fold on!!!!
