How is this as an upgrade?

Been browsing the forums, reading threads, drinking coffee, trying to decide how to upgrade my poor old machine (below in sign.), and I think I finally found what I need. How does this look?

Epox 8K3A
XP2000+
2x256mb DDR PC2700 (Original)
Abit GeForce4 Ti4200 128mb

Also getting new power supply and cooling equipment, but did not include it here.

I would like to hear your thoughts before I place the order, if possible

Thanks

that looks pretty good, you'll see quite the performance boost might i suggest getting 1 stick of RAM though, it is usually easier to overclock with only 1 stick. also if money is tight, see if you cant track down a AGOIA core or AROIA 1600+ XP stepping and just overclock it to 2000+ levels. other than that looks good.

140 bucks? Now that would be something, if I only could find it.

512mb original PC2700 sticks are available for 170 bucks around here, I might go for that.

<stupid question> Just read at the Epox site that the 8K3A mobo doesn't support memory faster than 2700, which means there's not really any reason for me to buy 3200 memory, right? </stupid question>

It also states that the XP2000+ isn't recommended. Maybe I should go for the XP2100+?

I pretty sure about this one but correct me ppl if im wrong....if you plan to o/c ur FSB then that will allow you to have pc3200 RAM...if you dont plan to o/c ur fbs then for for some Corsair XMS pc2700 CAS2.0 DDR. Thats supposed to be the highest of quality and fast too. I'd go with 1 512mb stick cuz it will leave room for expansion later. You can get the RAM at newegg.com for $160 for the one 512mb stick. PC3200 CAS2.0 will run ya a bit more.

Also I would go for a 400watt PSU for sure...cuz the AMD Athlon is a power hog.

Thats all goodluck!!

Those Corsair sticks seem nice, however newegg.com doesn't support shipping to Sweden and in local stores over here they cost almost twice as much for some unknown reason.

How about a Chieftech ATX 420W for a PSU? One of the cheaper I could find, don't know too much about its stats though...

O, sorry I didnt realize where you lived...However If you can stomach spending a good deal of cash I would say go for the corsair. But if you cant just make sure the DDR you do choose is CAS2.0 not CAS2.5. The CAS2.0 is faster. I also hear from many people that crucial memory is good, so if you can find that stuff in your area for a resonable price I would say head that way.

As for your PSU, 420watts is by all means enough power. Im not sure though as to the quality of Cheiftec as I have never used one, (but im sure they are just fine). I have heard though that Antec True Power PSU's are some of the best around. (dont get Antec Smart Power and Antec True Power mixed up). However price and availablility will probably again be issues, so ask more questions, post more, and shop around for the best prices.

Hope this helped!!

,Justin

Helped a lot, thanks

Found a Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200 CAS2 for £152 at overclockers.co.uk. Anything worth buying? At least they ship to Sweden...

Yeah, that corsiar memory is worth it, in my opinion, corsair makes some awesome ram. also, www.newegg.com has the AMD 1600XP AGOIA Cores for $52.00, not sure if they ship overseas though
