Question on what to get, and where =)

I'm planning on getting a new MSI GF4 Ti4200, but am a little concerned on whether to get the 64 or 128mb version. I've noticed that the price difference between the two cards is about $30 (more for the 128mb, obviously), but am willing to dish out the extra cash if it's worth it. I'll probably use the card for 8+ months, so it needs to last me. From reading around, it seems the future games will be needing more video memory, so I'm thinking the 128mb choice may be a wise decision, despite it's slower speeds.

On a side note, I do plan on OC'ing this card, which is my reason for choosing the MSI, plus it has an awesome software package (*cough* games ). Hope I haven't left anything out... oh yeah, I will be upgrading soon, so this thing will probably be used in a system with a 1600+, 512mb 2100 ddr ram, and the mobo is unchosen thusfar, although shouldn't be a big deal in this decision. Thanks for any help!

ryan

Bah, one more thing... where should I buy this from? I've found a couple reputable places selling the 128mb card for around $160 total (shipping and all). Is this about how much I should expect to pay?

Thats a kick ass card w/ 64 or 128 mb.

If you play games like UT2k3 and plan on playing Doom III or games with lots of textures in general then I would get the 128 mb version. Once the memory for textures goes over 64 mb you will see a large performance gain from the 128 mb card.

If you play games that aren't quite so demanding then the 64 mb card would be better.

Don't get me wrong, the 64 mb card will play UT2k3 and Doom III fine, but if you are using high texture qualities the 128 mb version will out perform the 64 mb version for sure.

also remember that the 64mb version usually have better ram and default speeds are higher than 128.

Get the 128 mb version my friend along time ago was about to get the 64 mb version on a visiontek card and i told him to get the 128 meg version. He got the 128 and thanked me later on .

Alright, thanks for the info guys, looks as if I'll be going with the 128mb version. There's a good chance I'll be playing Doom3 as well as UT2k3, so this seems like the right choice... But where should I buy? Is $160 about right, or are there ways to get this card cheaper? Thanks again.

If you are in to most of the games I like which aren't too demanding (Simcity, Midtown Madness, Age of Kings, etc..) then 64MB is fine. For the more demanding games that have already been listen you might look into the 128MB.

Newegg is a good place to buy. Sometimes when I am in BestBuy or CompUSA I go to the hardware section (I use the term losely) because they have very little and I only see Radeons. Bestbuy.com and compusa.com are also good as they have a better selecion then their stores.

Hmm, thanks for the info on that Jaton card residentevil2, too bad the rating on the site is so low .

How does this place look for the MSI cards?

Essential Computer Inc.

I'm curious though what the real difference between the MS-8870 and MS-8886 is? The EC Inc. site gives them different descriptions (It shows the MS-8870 having higher memory bandwidth, for instance), but the MSI site shows them as having the same "stats". The only differences I notice are that the MS-8886 has TV-in/out, as well as dual vga, but no DVI connector, and the MS-8870 has the DVI connector, but no tv in or dual vga. As far as I know, the DVI allows me to hook up a digital screen to my computer... Assuming I'm correct, would I even need this? If someone could explain it's uses, that would be awesome, thanks.

Anyway, if the DVI isn't a big plus and not really needed, I'd definately rather have the dual vga and tv-in, even if I wouldn't use it too often. Also, to the people who mentioned NewEgg, all there 128mb cards are sold out . And Matthew, thanks for that info. I plan on using this system for some lannage (bah, it's my only system!), so I think I'll be needing some more memory for the more demanding games in the future.

Essential Computer...9.19

But yeah, Newegg is a great place, everyone has good things to say about them! I would probably purchase from them, but they're sold out... unless they get some new ones in soon.

DVI is for connecting those flat panel (LCD I think) screens and I think only the good ones use it at that. If you use a non-flat panel monitor then you needn't worry out the DVI connector.

I could be way off here, but that is my understanding of what the DVI connector is for.

Anyway, there are tons of great posters that probably know exactly what the DVI connecter is for and will correct me if I'm wrong.

Heh, awesome Homer. How is that Albatron anyway, as far as OCing ability (That version, not the turbo one)? I finally just signed up so they will send me an email when the card comes in... thanks to all who suggested Newegg.

Hmm, thanks for the info OC Noob! I really hope your right, as I don't plan on getting an LCD screen any time soon, too expensive IMO (But would definately be a nice luxury item ). Well, think I'll do a little searching around the forums to confirm what exactly the DVI is for...

Planning on getting the MSI ti4200 128mb from Newegg... If they don't get any in soon, I might just order from the place I mentioned above. Oh btw... what is better to use for OCing the card... powerstrip or the one that comes with the nvidia drivers?
