I need you're help to build a comp

Hi, I'm trying to build a good gaming computer for under $600. This price doesn't include monitor, keyboard, or OS, but does include a mouse. I was wondering what you would get in my situation, I'm probably going to get Athlon 2000+.

Any advice on what I should buy on a budget around $600? Thanks.

Crucial PC2700 256MB $90
Maxtor D740X 60Gig $90
ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB $100
Themalright SK7 $30
NIC or 56k $10
Microsoft or Logitech Optical USB Mouse $20
Lite-on CD-RW 32X or above $50
This adds up to $540, you have $60 for a decent case/PSU combo
Overclock your 1600+ to 1.8GHz if you have good cooling and stepping

Edit: there is no money left for speakers, I guess you have to settle with a $5 headphone

so get a monitor with front headphone jack! you have been warned

Hrmm, pretty good, but I think the one I put together is better personally. Since I really am not experienced at overclocking this is what I put together:

Athlon XP 2000+
256 MB DDR RAM
Motherboard Asus A7V333 VIA KT333
60 GB Western Digital Hard-Drive
ALBATRON GeForce 4 TI4200P
Plextor Plexwriter 16/10/40A
Floppy Drive
Case
Microsoft Optical Explorer Mouse

What are your opinions on this? Anything I should change? Anyone have a better idea? Thanks again in advance.

If youre not gonna overclock the faster proc and video card will be nice. I would ditch the plexwriter and get a 32x or faster lite-on like toastedzergling said, they are rated very highly by everyone and are cheap (~40 bucks!). Make sure you buy a 7200 rpm hard drive.

The abit KD7 (non-raid) is cheaper and has more features (like onboard lan), not to mention is a newer chipset. So a different board might be a better choice.

2 Questions....

Couldn't I probably get a better vid card for just a little more? Like the Albatron 4200 I have listed above?

And........should I look around for a larger hard-drive, I could get a 60 GB 7200 RPM here
Wouldn't that be a little better? Thanks for the help

I updated my list to include a 60gb Hard drive. Upgrade Solution has a very mixed review on reseller rating. Half of the people that left feedback had terrible experience with their customer support

I don't think the Albatron you're listing is the Albatron you think it is. Look for their 4200 turbo.

If I was you I would advise you to get the parts off of newegg. For maybe the extra $5 it's definetly worth it.
