After reading an article on Overclockers.com about Windows XP changing the mode of certain devices from Ultra DMA to PIO, I noticed that there was a mention in there that Windows XP does it by default.

The same thing keeps happening to my CD-ROM drive (Lite-on 16x Write) - Does anyone know of a way of disabling Windows XP from reverting to PIO mode, cos it's chuffin' annying !

:(

TIA

Steven

it doesn't do it by default.
ocassionally with a new install it will not set a UDMA optical drive to UDMA. you just change it to "DMA if available".

other times, as it gets certain errors, it will progressively lower the UDMA rating until finally it locks out in "PIO mode only". and can't be changed back.
to fix that, you need to unistall the channel that this has happened to and reboot.
windows will detect the channel and "DMA if available" will become available again.
