Yes but the drives will only run in ATA33 mode. ATA66 and up modes repuire the 80-pin IDE cable.

Pardon the dumbness, but I've wondered this for awhile but never actually asked.... How is it the 40 pin, 80 conductor cables work exactly? 40 pins with 80 conductors?

actually there's only 39 pins.

the 2nd 40 conductors are grounded to help keep the data integrity at higher speed intact.

The extra 40 wires are there to prevent cross-talk between the wires, essential for high speeds. Only half of the wires actually carry data, the other half just sit there.
