Depending on the distro, startx --kde, startx --gnome or startx kde, startx gnome should do the trick.
 
most of the time just startx will work. By default startx will search the X, home, and etc directorys for the xinit script to run x. Changeing you windowmanager is as easy as editing that script and adding the windowmanager you want to run.
 
The name of such script is usually .xinitrc (at least the home in user's home directories).
