what's ambient temp?

Sorry newbie question here. I'm trying to understand how to see if my temps are fine. So what is ambient temp? Is that the temp of my room? I don't have a way to find out the temp in the room.
Also, then what is system temp? or mainboard temp? And would system temp be the same as ambient temp? Also, how far apart should system temp or ambient temp and cpu temp be to have a good cooling system?

Hope that didn't confuse you, thanks for the answer.

Ambient is the temp of your room. System temp doesn't sound very descriptive to me, it could either be your CPU temperature or your case temperature. Mainboard temperature is the temp that your mainboard reports; it can be read using Motherboard Monitor 5. My CPU temp usually gets within 10 degrees C of my ambient temp, and I'm using watercooling. With air cooling, it could be anything from 10-20.

I think system temps and mainboard temps are the same. Sometimes motherboards have two thermistors. One at the top and bottom of the board.
