This isn't a Democracy

Not bashing anyone in particular, but it seems to me that whenever something is happening (as far as the politics of the forum- questioning the mods decisions as to how things are run)- people assume that they have a word in this, as if they can vote to make a change.

This forum is not a democracy. It is a community of people- made up of multiple forms of governments- Its a Socialism, Communism, and Bureaucracy- But not a Republic or a Democracy. We do not have representative- nor do we elect them.

It's socialism because the people at the top deal with the forums economy, its communistic because we all contribute to this forum for the common advantage of all members, and it's a Bureaucracy because we have bureaus of mods in every room, keeping us in control, yet aiming at the same goal- to make this forum a great place to be at for everyone.

I like the way things are going. If you want a word, or a right to vote for things that happen in here, then the forums should tax you. It's kind of funny- seeing a government being formed on the Internet.

Also- please note that skip is god here.

it is a democracy within ability.

Get a rally to form a new forum.......or delete one no longer used.

Find a smiley or general design the populace wants changed.

Speak of a rule you feel is unfair or could use a change, and have a majority back you.

all of the above have been affected by majority vote.

Limits are only put in place to please most of the people here.....and we'll NEVER be able to please everyone. These forums are geared towards individuals with a desire to get more out of what they've paid for. At the same time, we have members with just that desire, who should not be exposed to the (probably) every day language/comments/pictures adults are. We not only value the younger members, but the parents of these members who would not want their children (or our own children) explosed to some of the typical material found every day on most any forum/website. These same "goals" also appeal to several adult members who just don't care to be exposed to it.

I sincerely apologize to anyone who doesn't approve of our "restrictions"......but on the other hand, I can give you links to other sites who welcome, what we don't, with open arms.

as far as forum bandwidth costs.....until a lot more people chip in to help cover the staggering costs, we'll be forced to impose limits anywhere we can to remain under purchased bandwidth.

Whatever eskimo.

As far as shadow- Your right. Limits are there for reasons, and I have no problem with them. This is a well organized and run forum, and I think it's one of the best.

I would also like to thank you for making the right decisions as a mod and a senior member, and would like to tell you and the others that run this forum that your all doing a really good job.

somehow I thought I added a "thanks" in my post.....but after re-reading it, I realize I overlooked any type of appreciation towards your post diggingforgold.

Thanks for the post. =)

You don't have to worry about a lot of the comments you'll find in these forums....there are restrictions at home too......like what time you have to go to bed.

Anyone who doesn't like the restrictions of this forum should try another. I've tried plenty. Few are as good as this one.

I have no problem with restrictions. The only ones that actually made me change or check into changing are the recent avatar limits and the sig limits. Both are no big deal keeping within the limits.

i think that the sig and avatar changes are small sacrifices for the amount of knowledge and camaraderie available in this forum that said, it isnt a democracy.....skip said it himself, its a benevolent dictatorship

Yeah... Nihili says a lot of things. Most of which I don't understand.

A lot of times, things are put out to the membership before a decision is made. Some things are, some aren't; it usually depends on the nature of the change. We all DO have a say in how things go, just not a very huge one. It's just the people who whine because they don't get their way or violate a rule and get called on it that require threads like this.

I do have a question about the forums. Who owns it, is it a money pit, a money maker, or mostly non-profit? What's the history behind it's creation?

Skip owns the server it's hosted on, so I guess you would say he owns it. However, Joe C. and Ed also are major parts of the overclockers.com community, not just the forums. The bandwidth costs are fairly high, so it probably takes more money out of Skip's pocket than it puts money in. Back when the forums were in his house on T1's the costs were outrageous... not sure what they are now though, but still pretty high. From what I've observed however, Skip doesn't do it for financial profit.

As far as history behind the forums, I haven't been here long enough to give you anything but a very brief overview. Others have been here longer than I and I'm sure they could help you out more there.

the forums are an absolute joke for profit. Skip pays an rather large sum out of pocket every month just to cover bandwidth. This is why I prod members for donations every so often.

Fact is........if I don't (or any of us don't) prod, contributions DON'T come. December was the best month we've ever had.......we actually covered the cost of bandwidth (mind you ONLY bandwidth). January we got zero for donations.

I think members don't realize $1 here $5 there really DOES add up! Considering bandwidth alone is in excess of a grand a month, you can see where even a few hundred would greatly help.......

No, this isn't for profit.......it's a very expensive hobby.

You can always find Skip's paypal addy at the bottom of the main forum page.........or just send to Skip@overclockers.com

If you need a snail mail addy.........just give one of us a buzz. DO NOT be ashamed to send ANY amount.........we've received donations under $3.......now if we could get 100 people to do that......

Oh and btw........the forums themselves are Skips pride and joy..........the front page is Joe C's. Ed is an excellent writer for the front page.

Just a note from me.

This is one of the best "Active" forums I've ever seen.

Even if a section or 2 does not seen any activity,
the information is there for reference by others.
(I've seen this a few times here)

Remember that article about....... ? *search* there it is ! WOOT!

Historical Archives, what ever.
These forums have it all.

Good. Bad. Indifferent.
This is the community we choose all participate in.

Just try to make it a better place for the next person is all.
