ATI-Cat3+Dx9 problems in OGL? Work-around INFO!

After clean install of ATI Cat3 & Dx9, RTCW wouldn't run properly. It was back to the 6218 drivers, until a fix or solution appeared. Sys: P4, 8IHXP, rdram, Radeon9700pro (not oc'ed), Santa Cruz TB sound card, WinXPpro. Previous Cat Dx9 driver (+Dx9 beta) also made RTCW unplayable.

Played around with editing wolfconfig sound parameters, with no luck. Some have suggested that Cat3 has problem with Q engine in general & possibly sound card issues. Even re-install of RTCW, after Cat3/Dx9, didn't work.

Following the solution by Alv (Rage3D), TURNING DOWN HARDWARE ACCELERATION ONE NOTCH (ATI troubleshooting Tab)did the trick here. Now, I'm back with RTCW & Dx9/new Cat 3 drivers. This should apply to other OGL games as well.

It's a problem known to ATI, according to those threads, & hopefully an official driver fix is coming soon.

Another fix involves replacing the 2 files, ati2dvag.dll & ati2mtag.sys, from the Cat 2.5 extraction, into the new Cat 3 setup. This is done in SAFE MODE only. After that DxDiag will show driver version 6218 running, but all other files will be from new Cat 3. Use this method carefully.

The work-around found by Alv seems the best for now, until ATI issues a real driver fix, as mixing driver files from different versions can be hazardous & quite tricky.
