It doesn't run in the family

It's that time of year when many of us who understand why plugs are color coded must once again trek to the homes of family members before they can use their magic trinkets.

Here's a short story illustrating what may happen to you this year.

My parents bought a Dell Laptop last year. I designed my dream machine and ordered it for them -- on their card, not mine nonono!
So they've got a GeForceGO and CDwriter, dual batteries, even wireless networking for and broadband -- the only feature they ever use.

Anyway I sent them a scanner this year and they opened it early. And told my mother to follow the instructions. 24 hours later I get a call. "Well, uh I read the instructions a dozen times last night, so I put the CD in and waited but nothing happened so it says I can do this other thing and go to my computer, click the CD drive and pick setup.exe... but nothing's there."
"Hmm, ok is the shiny side down?"
"No, I did it right."

This may be why she can't figure out how to use the burner...
She's got it right now thank god. Sometimes she can be stubborn.

Sometimes it's amazing how the parents of power users can be such.... end users...

Not that I'm much more than a hobbyist, but I just about went nuts when I had to talk my folks through installing a USB mouse. Forget about that external CD writer I got them ever being used. Who ever thought EZ-CD Creator was such a pain to use?

There's no-one at all in my family who's even REMOTELY computer literate, so i have no one to talk to about computers.

They don't even WANT to learn!! grrrr.....

I am not a Power User, and I am working on my own knowledge of computers, but I know what you're talking about.

If my Mom tells me one more time how upset she is because my father can't figure out the remote control, I think I'm gonna scream, *lol*. He drives her absolutely crazy. Then of course, she has to tell me. I think if he got a computer, my Mom would never have one moment of peace again, *lol*.

Every Power User was a Power User Wannabe at one point, so you're on the right track!

Lol.
Thanx! i'm hoping to be a power user when my system's done.
Well, i've already got a 1mbps connection (that's what i'm using now) so it should compliment my system quite nicely...

My parents know enough about PCs to do basic things like web surfing, and word processing. But they arent hobbyists.

Lol, you have to see my grandad trying to work a VCR.....its great fun watching. He acts like he is trying to defuse a bomb or something.

I hear your guys' pain all too well. No one in my family has any idea what's up with regard to computers. However, they think my mod jobs look pretty sweet. Hehe.

My dad is a semi-poweruser and my brother (as well as me)knows his stuff. So, I guess it runs in the male side of our family .

Hah! That article was too close to my grandma for comfort. I considered it a major victory on my part when she actually stopped picking up the mouse and waving it around in the air to try to move the pointer in an "up" direction.
