inconsistent sandra benchmarks

sandra gives me a large range of scores when i sit down and do the file system benchmark repeatedly, i get anywhere from 11000 to 25000kb/s! why? it fluctuates with little order, usually it's low right after boot up, then increases gradually and down and up again and again with no specific pattern? what gives?
