Would a 5-speaker system be a waste?

I'm planning on buying new speakers soon but I don't have room to put any speakers behind me so they would all be in front. Would it be a waste then to buy a 5 or 6 piece speaker system because the speakers wouldnt be all around me? Or would it still be better than a 2-piece speaker system?

it would be way better than a 2 piece but for your situation I say go with a 2.1 speaker system

Oh and I forgot to mention, I will be using them with a 5.1 sound card(Santa Cruz) so will it make any difference to use 5.1 speakers with a 5.1 sound card or to use 2.1 speakers with a 5.1 sound card in terms of sound quality?

yup. get a POWERFUL 2.1 setup.

I would go with a 4.1 or a 5.1 system for the simple fact that your situation isn't always gonna be that way. Most recommended setups have the speakers to the sides anyways. Just separate the side speakers by a coupla feet, up or down or horizontally. They'll sound great and you won't regret it.
