Mordy is right, maybe a 550 if I remember right. That's all that the board will do and all that was the fastest made for a super socket 7 chip. You could probably find a really inexpensive socket A board in the classified section in the forums to replace the P5-A. Good luck.

I DON'T KNOW TO MUCH ABOUT MOTHERBOARDS. I WOULD LIKE TO UPGRADE TO A ATHALON 2000 OR AROUND THERE. I AM NOT SURE IF I CAN DO THAT OR NOT. WILL A SOCKET A BOARD HAVE THE SAME SLOTS OR MORE SLOTS AS MY SOCKET 7? I HAVE LOOKED AROUND AND I HAVE SEEN SOME GOOD SOCKET A AND ATHALON COMBOS. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.

By slots do you mean PCI slots? Most boards come with 5-6 PCI slots.

You can't really get a whole lot more performance with that motherboard. There are no adapters to run anything other than a Socket 7 CPU in your board.
A K6-2+ or K6-3+ could boost performance some, but they will only work with the earlier P5A. They won't work with rev. 1.05 or later.
If you have the early version of the board, and picked a a K6-2+ 550 for less than $30.00, that'd be a worthwhile upgrade. But that is pretty unlikely.
In my opinion, you'd be better off saving your money and making the jump to a Socket A based system, with DDR ram, and an ATA100 harddrive.

Pretty much everything should be interchangeable. Any new board you buy isn't going to have any ISA slots, (the longer brown ones, I think the P5A has two) so any thing you have that is an ISA card will have to be replaced. Your present harddrive will work, but unless it is a newer drive, you'd be giving up a lot of speed if you use it instead ofa new one. But it would work until you can afford to upgrade.

Your drive should be fine. You could get the number off of it , and go to WD's site and find out if it is an ATA 66 or ATA100.
If you have any cards that use the ISA slots in the motherboard you have now (sound card, modem or NIC) they will have to be replaced. So you'll have to figure that into the cost of your upgrade. If you aren't using the ISA slots in your present motherboard, then it won't be a problem.

Most motherboards now have a pretty good sound chip built in. You may not have to worry about the sound card at all.

An ATA66 is good. It will be a little slower than an ATA100, but you'll hardly notice.
Lance is right, most motherboards come with good onboard sound now. Not as good as the best sound cards out there, but probably better than your ISA sound card.
Many of us here use an online vendor called Newegg for the best prices around generally. www.newegg.com I recently saw a post of some good deals on Epox refurbs, including the one I have for $41.00. I paid a little over $60.00 for mine as a refurb a couple of months ago. They say that they don't come with cables etc., but they often do. My refurb came in an unopened retail box. I finally figured out that the ATA33 CDROM IDE cable was defective, one of the connectors was on the cable backwards. They probably had a whole shipment of them, couldn't sell them as normal retail, so to the refurb department they went.

Newegg

Repoman is right, Newegg is a wonderful place. Imagine your favorite toy store and multiply it by 100. That's Newegg. Everything for the geek in us all. Try their refurb section first, then try shopping normally. Good luck and keep us posted!

Things only in the refurbished section are refurbished. Everything else is new I believe.
