Onboard GF2 MX to ATi 8500 64mb DDR = NO CHANGE!? Help!

I was recently using my onboard video to game with (GeForce2 MX, sharing 32mb of my 256mb ram). So, I ordered a refurbished ATi 8500 64mb DDR from newegg, running at 275/275 stock. I fire up Quake3 and expect to see atleast over 100FPS.. negative. I got maybe 80something max. I tweaked alot of stuff with Rage3D Tweak v3.6 and even overclocked the card to 300/300. I can break MAYBE 100 if looking into black sky. I was expecting alot more out of this.. did I have too high of hopes? Is something messed up here? Any ideas? I'm desperate!

My system is as follows:

Asus A7N266-VM/AA (nForce 220 board)
AMD XP 1600+ @ stock
256mb Kingston PC2100 @ Turbo timings (will have 512mb tomorrow)
WinXP Pro, SP1.. completely up to date.

Please help

Reformat. Remnents of the old onboard drivers are still around. If you do a clean install of windows your performance should increase.

Thanks for the quick response, i'll reformat a little later tonight. I need to anyway to clear off all the stuff I no longer use.

I give up, I completely reformatted. Updated WinXP Pro to most recent everything. Direct X 9, Catalyst 3.0... still the same thing and almost the exact same FPS. 300/300 goes over 100FPS, barely, when looking into black sky. I just don't know what to do anymore.. I expected this to outdo the onboard GF2 MX single handedly... but, I guess not? Any other suggestions? Getting really desperate now.

Thanks for all the help so far, I really do appreciate it!

Turn off Vsync in the ATI control panel. That should get ya above 100fps.

I've tweaked it all and got squat back. I was looking to see atleast over 125fps in game.

even with your great system, i think you may be processor limited, QuakeIII isnt very stressing on a video card anymore....try overclocking the 1600+ and see if that improves the fps

How I wish I could... lol

I think that would cure all. This mobo doesn't allow overclocking unless you modify it. Which, I partially did... but, I need some Defogger Repair/Conductive Ink to get it to maybe work (which is how I should have done it in the first place).

Maybe the nForce 1's performance is just plain poor?

You might try CPUFSB for a little overclocking. If it supports your PLL chip you can change the FSB in windows! You have a great vid card and I dont think thats whats holding you back. Isnt 100 FPS enough in quake? Try something like UT2003 and you will notice a huge performance gain with your new card.

Im pretty sure quake has the max fps set at 100, so the fps just hovers around there. I searched around for the correct command but all I have found is this:

seta com_maxfps "140"

you could try setting it to 0 to see if that will disable the max fps or just set it to something like 400. Im not sure if that is the right command but I know there is one.

Hey, that system looks familiar.

I'd like to see what kind of performance you get in UT2k3 too
