There's a possibility that you can kill anything, however the worst that usually can happen is that you don't connect all the bridges and it fails to post. Then you have to clean off and do it again - that's why I recommend people to have a 10x magnifying glass handy.
With most types of modding/voiding warranties there is always a small risk you take. Most people accept it. The only real scenario I see is if you are scratching/lapping the L1 area(to get through the coating) and you get too deep into the copper. Even then it would probably still work, unlocking doesn't carry much risk.
